Interestingly, note how the music on the original Hearts idents was an (albeit very heavy) reworking of the 1989 Get Ready jingle. If you listen closely, you can hear some riffs and hooks that have followed through.

Anyway, it's a travesty these idents were never used. They had such potential. Instead, we had to put up with knickers on a washing line.

The LWT ident on the first page is a (poorly edited and dubbed) version of the original 'Umbrellas' ident, which was a more prolonged sequence, with a wonderfully sublime soundtrack. It would have worked well into The Railway Children , or something depressing. Like Pop Idol . I suspect the mix that's appeared on YouTube was somewhere between the transmogrification from the original, excellent concepts, to the mediocre Hearts set that finally stumbled onto our screens in 1998. If you see what I mean.

I would imagine the knickers on a washing line sequence was also intended to be part of this original set of idents, along with the railway station, lawn mower, girls on beach, etc. which similarly made it into the final, re-edited versions.

You do get the feeling though that there was so much more care and creativity put into the original, unused set. On the swimming pool ident for example, in the original version previously available on TCB, they'd gone to the trouble of airbrushing out the 'SALTDEAN LIDO' sign, presumably to make the footage more generic.

In the final version used on screen, it seems they'd just used the raw footage, with the sign back there.

I've always got the impression that English & Pockett created a set of beautiful idents for ITV, of which they were justifiably proud. ITV then messed them about, insisting on re-edit after re-edit, and in the end, they just tossed off a rough and ready final version, their initial vision in tatters.

The real sad thing as well, is the unused set of idents actually did come within a few days of going to air according to a friend who was an announcer at YTV. They were pulled at the last minute because, apparently, they were considered a bit too 'arty'. All that went to air on the planned date were the break bumpers (the heart splashing into ink, etc.) and the trailer endboards.

Wasn't the other reason used was that the music was too loud and overpowering, either way its a real shame that we never saw these quality idents make it to air.
