So they came up with that thing -- probably the most creatively bankrupt piece of garbage I've ever seen. That was, to all intents and purposes, Tyne Tees's "logo" from 96 to 98.
I have a few copies of that on VHS -- indeed I wouldn't be surprised if that were my cap, our aerial wasn't great at that stage (problems with water ingress -- it was replaced a year or so later).
To be fair, even with the best aerial set-up in the world, that endcap always looked distinctly blurry.
Yes Whitby is TTTV territory -- they have (had?) a relay there.
They actually have a *new* relay there. Due to coastal erosion, the old one was in serious danger of falling into the sea.
Local viewers had to retune their TVs and in some cases reposition their aerials for the move. On-screen messages to retune were broadcast - caps in this thread.
Well, they have one half-arsed new relay that's been put in the wrong place and should have been digital from the start, and the promised secondary relay for Sandsend which is screened from the new relay never happenned on cost grounds, leaving people with no signal.
Well, although the Channel 3 branding was pretty much a disaster, watching that youtube clip has made me go all rose tinted. In 11 years, look what's happened to a typical night's programming on ITV. It's gone from a pretty reasonable menu of Gameshow, Soap, series drama (as The Bill was then, nowadays it's virtually a soap IMO), Sitcom, Period Drama to the fayre of trash they now put out. Tonight in the same timespan it's: Soap, Soap, regional doco (soon to be dropped AIUI), another Soap , and a Drama.
Yeah, for me these discussions always underline the same thing - whatever was wrong with ITV 10 (or even 5) years ago, it's still better than what we have now. However much certain regional stations were treated like dirt in the 90's, they still had it comparitively easy compared to today when all of the smaller stations are simply industrial sheds with almost no local control existing only to knock out an ultra-cheap regional news programme, and even that function is ever under threat of further consolidation if ITV's 'super region' plan is approved (sorry, when ITV plc simply inform OFCOM that this is the way it will be, and demand the formality of their rubber stamp to make it look like the regulator is still in control).

Oh and I used to LOVE Prisoner ...
As did I. I took the wise (I think!) step of recording almost all of it from the C5 run (along with a lot from the end of Westcountry's run), and did trade tapes for a little while around 1999/2000, so I have well over 75% of the series preserved for posterity on VHS, with plans to try and fill in the gaps one day.
But, you can now buy an official DVD release of the entire series (with bonus features) on 179 DVDs spread over 40 volumes supplied in a metal flight case! Only problem is that you have to love the series enough to part with around £750 to get it!
A bargain really though, the series did go on for almost 8 years and ended up at 692 episodes, which works out at £1.08 an episode (and in much better condition than the ropey old tapes transmitted in the UK - the final couple of years were even recorded with a stereo soundtrack which never saw the light of day over here)
