This is somewhat surprising, I’d always assumed Lorraine was directly employed by ITV/ITV Breakfast.

Given that Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby are on golden handcuff contracts with ITV, I’m guessing they won’t be able to argue that they’re freelance? Although both have other sources of income from partnerships.

It would be interesting to see which ITV presenters are employed by ITV and which are freelance, Stacey Solomon said only recently she is freelance, and I believe Ranvir Singh has also mentioned it too. As the likes of Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway work with a range of broadcasters, I’m guessing they’re freelance too?

I imagine situations like Ranvir when she is GMB poltical editor and would appear to be on a contract when she is not (clearly because of her ITN commitments) are what HMRC will be cracking down on the most.

Lorraine's getting such a kicking over this in the media and it's not deserved.

Maybe, but if you've ever read her awfull Clarkson-esque Sun column you'll know she's not above ill-informed, mob mentality shaming so there's a bit of a "what goes around comes around" scenario here.

Not all of the programmes they work on are ITV Studios productions - Celebrity Juice is Talkback Thames for example.

I'm going to guess that the whole "theatrical artist" thing was simply that there is either a specific exemption in the legislation or some case law that applies to theatrical artists and she is trying to associate herself with that?

I think it has some link with agent's expenses being tax deductible if you a theatrical artist.

Well ITV News just did a hatchet job on here, focussing on the fact that she is apparently pretending to be nice on TV as an act.

Comments on Twitter are all hating on her, saying it’s disgraceful that she ‘doesn’t pay tax’ and she is personally starving the NHS of funds. Also lots of anger at how much she gets paid.

Probably because the majority of ITV journalistic news staff are PAYE employers of ITN.

I believe the "theatrical artist" thing was only brought up by the judge in her summing up and wasn't really a part of Lorraine's defence.

I think the point being made was, when ITV buy Lorraine, they're not just hiring a member of staff to appear on screen, they're buying Lorraine as a brand, and that's not something you can employ.

That's Twitter for you. Wink

Though I'm surprised Piers, who loves to comment at whatever is trending and getting the "snowflakes" going hasn't given his two pennies. Especially as he loves to mock Gary Lineker's tax arrangements.

Well, Piers just so happens to have a limited company as well.

Lorraine has stepped back from Twitter but is toughing this out on air. She's discussed with Dan Wootton an upcoming All Round To Mrs Brown's appearance and said "I'm playing myself, which is a stretch, obviously".

No, it's not something you can employ...because it's absolute made up bollocks.

I imagine that some people (including HMRC) were slightly surprised that Lorraine Kelly is not employed directly by ITV, but instead is a freelancer who regularly hosts ITV's Lorraine. On the face of it you might automatically assume that someone presenting a show that bares their name to be directly employed by the channel or production company, rather than being freelance for that programme.

I think Lorraine is in the wrong here.

It's ironic that they made a big deal about the NHS on one of her shows last year.

But I guess she was acting all the time and the tears were just an act? Nah, don't buy it.
