All this nonsense about being accessible is really pointless.

At best you get to hear from people whose greatest concern is the amount of makeup Kaplinsky wears, and you get some canned dissertation from the BBC Apparatchik about being inclusive and how much the globe sucked.

You don't really need to have "experience in the industry" to look at a channel, and not particularly like what you see...

But that's not the point Horseferry was making - s/he was saying that just because a bunch of anoraks don't like the BBC One idents, it doesn't mean that the rest of the country hates them too.

It is fair to say that some people do like the dancer idents. I did on their first day of showing on Good Friday in 2002. But after the umpteenth showing of those rooftop imbeciles leaping about, you start to think, "For God's Sake Fall off the bloody Roof and Give Us something interesting to look at!" However, like it or not, most people have never endeared themselves to the idents, most find it irritating. How does Salsa dancers appeal to my 78 year grandmother who has mobility problems? Lorraine Heggessey has transformed the channel though. More people watch BBC1 now than ITV1. (This may be because progs on ITV are all crap) but that's why most people dislike the dancers, because we are all having them rammed down our throats all the time.

Better than having balloons rammed down your throat between each programme!
I am sure your grandmother likes to see others dancing. Being disabled doesn't mean you stop wanting to see the things you were able to do but no longer can.

How do you know what my nan likes? I never said I liked the balloons. I just think the dancers are irrelevant.

At the moment quite limited. Why? Do you make better and better television the longer you have been in the industry? I don't think it works like that.

I may not have the experience, but I've got ideas, which is more than some TV execs have.

I'd be interested to know exactly why 'these days' years of TV experience mean absolutely nothing. TV production is a highly complex skill, so yes, the longer you do it the better programmes you tend to make - experience does count.

And the job of channel controller is one which countless people seem to reckon they could do better than the actual person doing the job - but the reality is, none of them would probably come even remotely near having the skills and experience needed for the job.

How do you know how "most" viewers feel? Did you survey 15 million people? Rolling Eyes

Using just as unscientific a basis as yours, I'd say that "most" really don't give a toss either way. They neither like the idents nor hate them - they just accept them as part of the channel furniture, just as they did with the balloon, and the globe, and on and on. They could care less what appears on the screen in the few seconds before their favourite programmes.

I know the same way that webfax seems to know what my nan likes. 15 million viewers told me by telephone or email. Anyway, my basis is based on the fact that it's better to moan about the unimportant things in life than worry about the things that really bother us. Despite what some replies I have been receiving insinuate, I don't actually give a toss about the idents, it's just fun to join in a conversation. I enjoy the witty replies and the rather catty comments you can get. That's what makes the world go round, not a BBC1 dancer. But they are crap arnt they!?
