I experience a medical condition that requires me to attend the bathroom a number of time during the night. I am often unable to get back to sleep so I watch TV. The problem is that I am one of the eleven million people in the UK who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing - that’s one in 6 of us. A large percentage of Freeview have no subtitles meaning they are a waste of time for the hard of hearing. Whenever this subject is raised it inevitably draws responses that are cop outs for Freeview and they don't wash because Freeview must surely have some influence with these cheap jacks.

To summarise that ... it’s is nothing to do with Freeview ..... that is just a marketing company .
Or any one else other than the broadcaster / channel who are regulated by OFCOM

But
There are over 80 channels who are required to meet the level one of 80% subtitles
This is who they were last year

Most are at the arround 90% with PSB higher ...
And the BBC at its own target of 100% on all but “parliament”
100% is almost achieved ...
Red Bee have live subtitlers on standby if prepared subtitles fail on the BBC .
But equipment fails ... all be it infrequently

But level one target means say four hours a day are not subtitled ....
And there are few viewers in the early hours of the morning..

Can I just point out that IPlayer has subtitles but not all others

While it's obviously no substitute for properly edited pre-prepared subtitles, the newest version of Android can use text-to-speech to add subs to any video, including live streaming.

It's not bad at all, and I've found myself using it quite a bit recently while catching up on TV on my phone while stuck under a baby in the middle of the night. I wonder how long before someone builds it in to a TV?
