Analogue Channel 5 is not from Pontop Pike. It comes either from Burnhope(Channel 68 ), or from a transmitter near Newcastle somewhere (I think its called Fenham - Channel 56). I live directly facing Pontop, but cant get Channel 5 as Shield Row is down a hill from Burnhope. Of Course Pontop broadcasts all the Digital Multiplexes, so I get 5 via that! *Takes Breath*

Going back to Bill Steel's trademark clicks, is this whats happening here, or is it something else.

Certainly is, and that's Bill in a fairly gentle mood actually!

On North East Today on Thursday (Pontop), Pam Royle announced that the programme would be "back in September". (temporary cut in wages for me, anyway)

Am I to understand that in fact, it won't return?

From this article in the Jounal, it seems that the cuts won't take effect until the end of the year.

Tyne Tees TV to get less airtime May 28 2002

By David Whetstone, The Journal

A new ITV charter on regional broadcasting was welcomed by Tyne Tees last night even though it will mean less airtime for the North-East commercial television station.

The charter, agreed with the watchdog Independent Television Commission, means Tyne Tees' regional programmes will get better slots in the schedule - but the station's current regional output will come down from the current nine-and-three-quarter hours a week on air to eight-and-a-half hours.

Graeme Thompson, Tyne Tees controller of programmes, said: "It means we don't spread ourselves quite so thinly at the outer reaches of the schedule.

"The big thing for us is that the evening news will become part of News At Ten which is shown in peak time.

"For the last year the ITV schedule has had the news on at 11.30 or 11.40 at night. We have always felt strongly that the national and regional news should be next to each other.

"The fact that we are to be part of an integrated news is a good thing as far as we are concerned."

Mr Thompson revealed that the lunchtime magazine programme North East Today, shown at 1.05pm, would cease at the end of the year and the airtime dedicated to other programming options.

But he said presenters Pam Royle and Claire Montgomery, who currently host the shows from the north and south of the region simultaneously, would still appear in other slots.

He said the station would trim some bulletins and concentrate less on programmes that ended up being shown at around midnight.

The new charter was presented yesterday as a means of securing "a sustainable future for ITV regional programming" by ensuring its quality and accessibility.

It stated that in future more than 50pc of ITV companies' investment in programmes would be outside London.

It said regional accountability would be strengthened with ITV companies having to appoint two non-executive directors to regional company boards and to establish regional advisory groups.

Mr Thompson welcomed news of an extra £1m to be invested in peak or near-peak regional programmes and an additional £2m fund for network production outside London for the coming year.

Sir Robin Biggam, chairman of the ITC, said: "Regional programming is central to ITV's public service commitments.

"In our discussions with ITV, the commission wanted to safeguard the continuation of these commitments.

"We have ensured the best quality deal for viewers while making the ITV schedules more coherent and competitive."

It was also announced yesterday that ITV is to plough an extra £25m into ITV1's network programme budget, supplementing the £750m already committed for 2002.

A spokeswoman said yesterday that spending would be "concentrated in areas of traditional strength for the channel such as high quality drama and entertainment".

I know we're covering old ground but what the hell:

"Here's a question: which programme is better - Look North (Newcastle) or North East Tonight?" (I asked this in Page 1 of this thread)

Well, the answer is very simple:

with this fine pair of presenters:

Oh yes, Carol was away on Thursday and Friday and she isn't going to present the Music Live special on Monday afternoon.Crying or Very sad

Will she be back on Tuesday at 6.35pm? I hope so!

Why? A pair of totally non-descript presenters, one of whom is a Tyne Tees and Border reject, presenting news with huge gaps in the coverage of the various parts of the region, which is a totally artificial region to start off with, often 24 hours behind the competition.

I've watched both programmes all my life, and have never thought the BBC even came close to Tyne Tees in this area. There is a air of stuffiness still to BBC Newcastle coverage which I personally cannot stand. The North East is not a region which takes kindly to the BBC's style; Tyne Tees's laid back attitude which it has maintained through thick and thin is far more a reflection of the region than the BBC will ever be.

I like both of them. I think the North East is the only region where u can watch both regional news bullitins.

Look North I think is better news wise and I love the studio. are they plasma's on the walls, the extra 'windows'?

As for NET I love the dodgy banter when Mike and Bob always try to go off the sript and fail misribly. heehee

I prefer the two presenter approach to regional news programmes and that has been absent on Tyne Tees since 1996 AFAIK. Carol and John are both very good presenters and they both come from the North East. Carol lives in Tynemouth not far from her birthplace, Cullercotes. John has lived in the LN Newcastle region and is proud of it. He grew up in Darlington in the 1970s.

Check the LN Newcastle website if you don't believe me! The address is www.bbc.co.uk/england/looknorthnecumbria

I know the region is far too large but LN does try to cover all areas. In a typical 6.30pm bulletin you get stories from Tyne and Wear, Cleveland, Northumberland, Co Durham and North Yorkshire. Cumbria features far less because not as much happens there as in the North East and North Yorkshire.

Anyway, people in Cumbria prefer Look North (Newcastle) AFAIK because the Caldbeck TX area became part of the BBC North West region in 1986 but this reverted back to LN in 1991 because Cumbrians have more in common with the North East than they do with Lancashire, Merseyside and Manchester.

LN Newcastle covers North Yorkshire because of the Bilsdale transmitter. I live in York where you can get both Leeds and Newcastle but in my uni bedroom, I get a better picture of Bilsdale. Plus there are many parts of the county which can only get Tyne Tees/LN Newcastle (Staithes, Whitby, Richmond, Aysgarth etc.)

Finally, Mike Neville is a good enough presenter, I do try to watch both programmes (NET @6pm, LN @6.30) but I think he badly needs a co-presenter. Also I think the set of NET should be changed; the set of LN is by far the best out of all the BBC English regions with the "window" showing the Tyne Bridge. Very spectacular IMO.

So there are reasons why I and other people prefer Look North to North East Tonight (or Lookaround).
