> Border have been sourcing a lot of their output from Granada since 1992
Many stations did pre-1993 though if you remember. Tyne Tees and Ulster (of all stations) used to follow Granada's schedule quite closely in the early 90's, admittedly not during the week and regional programming was generally totally independent, but a lot of the films, US imports and so on that were broadcast on Tyne Tees/UTV (and Border as well IIRC) were sourced from Granada. I remember it irritating me because Granada's presentation was always a bit dull and lifeless, I preferred Tyne Tees's clunky (clicks, buzzes and sound glitches all over the place ) but more creative slides, trailers etc. Obviously continuity was the same but you can't escape the look of the source station.
That's something I've often wondered about actually, did any of the other ITV stations have as many sound-breaks, dodgy screen wipes, buzzy advert tapes and so on as Tyne Tees? Added to the feeling of liveness, but it did seem a bit amateurish sometimes!!! Have a look at The Continuity Booth's 1986 Bill Steel startup (the one with the clock on the picture) to see what I mean (heh)... The way Bill seemed to clout the microphone button before some announcements was a local institution, you always knew when Bill was on lol.
IIRC, Border tended to broadcast some of the Granada local progs pre-1993 - "Comedy Store", "Granada Tonight - The Late Debate", "Granada Sports Action" and "Granada Soccer Night". It began to adopt more of a Granada look to the schedules from 1993 onwards.
This made me wonder who was really running Border - HQ in Carlisle, Granada in Manchester or (now) YTV in Leeds!!!

It was because there was a fader available, but Bill never seemed to bother to use it.
Anyway, the noise at the end of the announcement was more <shuffle><clatter>.
Kathy Secker seemed to get a smooth fade in most of the time, and when she didn't the click was very light. Bill seemed to want to break the button. I remember two occasions in the 80's when the microphone actually failed and there were no announcements for an hour or so -- on both occasions Bill was on....

Allan Cartner (one-time Border veteran) was another one who tended to clout the announcement button. It's funny that throughout his second stint at Tyne Tees he was never seen in-vision!

What, so he did appear in-vision in the 70s? I often wondered what he, and Clem Shaw looked like. I did see some footage of him on Border in the early 60s but I forget what he looked like even then.
I always found Allan quite an annoying announcer because he'd hide behind a slide even whe was reading birthday greetings to the kids. He had a strange voice as well. A sort of old, male version of Maggie Mash.

Hmmm.... I don't know if he was a TTTV IVA in the 70's as well, but I definitely know that he never appeared in vision during his time at TTTV from 1988-96. He had the distinction of being the last announcer to announce from Newcastle before Leeds took over.
Allan had a broad appearance and greying hair. He was also a newsreader whilst with Border and is well-remembered for the clarity of his bulletins. His brother, William, was a producer with Border, amongst his credits being Mr & Mrs.
Allan also provided the voice for Border's daily start-up announcement before these were abandoned in the late-80s:
"This is Border Television, broadcasting to Cumbria, south Scotland, the Isle of Man and north and west Northumberland, from the Caldbeck, Selkirk and associated transmitters of the Independent Broadcasting Authority". Those were the days!!!
There's a good clip on Darren Meldrum's site featuring one of his intros, and another one elsewhere (name escapes me!) of the intro plus the start-up music.

A few surprises on Look North yesterday:
1) No Carol Malia! Shock! She was obviously having one of her few days off. Wendy Gibson stood in for Carol at 6.30pm.
2) John Lawrence on the 10.25pm bulletin. Has anyone seen him on at 10.25?
Also there was no opt-out on North East Tonight yesterday. So, nowt from North Yorkshire. Still there's always tonight......

Well a very strange Look North tonight (Friday) with John on his own in the studio and Wendy presenting from the Centre of Life. Lara Rostrum presented the 10.25pm.
Look North Newcastle seem pretty good at having one presenter live at a place - they've done it from key football matches and when the Queen was in Newcastle... it seems to work quite well.

There's nowt like Looky Northy with Uncle John and Auntie Carol, is there? Uncle Mike is OK but sadly he presents North East Tonight all alone apart from when the sports presenter or the weather forecaster (Bob Johnson) is around. Then there's some banter. Look North (Newcastle) rules!
BTW, I was p**sed when I wrote this (à la Helen Philpot), Now, I've experienced student live to the full!

Hmmm. Well, this is all very interesting. I am in the fortunate (?) position of having a job which involves monitoring North East regional programming, together with being a native of West Yorkshire.
On North East Today on Thursday (Pontop), Pam Royle announced that the programme would be "back in September". (temporary cut in wages for me, anyway)

I didn't know that, But I assume it means Calendar Lunchtime Live won't be back until September either.
It looks like due to the World Cup, the traditional Tonight/Live Lunch etc "Summer Break" has started at least three weeks earlier than usual. Dales Diary repeats anyone?
Has Jonathan Morrell been spotted lately, after dashing up and down the M1 and A1 presenting all kinds of stuff, he seems to have gone off the face of the earth. He hasn't been on Calendar for a month, and they've even removed his picture from the Calendar website
