Interesting idea. Good that Highflyer are doing something to keep going after losing the Channel 4 Racing contract. Slightly surprised 'London Legacy' is one of the terms LOCOG have protected though.

Quote:
The London Legacy launch is expected to cost Highflyer around £5.5m.

"The amount of athletics on the main channels has been very small, especially when you think of all the disciplines within the athletics, but the games has changed all that," said Fairley.

He added that Highflyer had received "very serious undertakings" to back London Legacy from two or three companies, including one Olympic sponsor.

"There is this enormous opportunity ... and no sign that any of the main broadcasters is going to pick it up and run with it," he said.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Transworld Sport/Grandstand type programme made up of highlights from this channel shown on Channel 4.

Not much of a legacy thoguh if it's only available to Sky subscribers who on the whole already get such coverage via Eurosport.

Love the idea of it but for it to really work it needs to be free to air on all platforms - the question then is whether it would pay for itself.

I agree, Brekkie. But where is the funding for a Freeview spot going to come from?

I wonder how much new content they will realistic create on an average week. Also I wonder if it would have still happened had Highflyer not lost the Channel 4 racing contract.

Clearly a candidate for the direct IPTV market on Freeview HD, or via a Smart TV App on specific models of receiver.

The only way I could see it working (and them getting that crucial Freeview spot) is if they did it in partnership with a major channel, and I guess C4 or UKTV would probably be the most likely option (ITV, C5 or Sky certainly wouldn't do it!).
