Exactly. I think Merton is to good to be presenting a clip show personally. To suggest Denis Norden was the show is odd to say the least. I really can't imagine anyone fast forwarding through the clips to get to his terminally dull and unfunny links.

I wouldve thought Chris Tarrant was best for the job, particularly with Millionaire coming to an end soon. I used to like Terry Wogan doing Aunties Bloomers but I guess he's too much of a BBC face.

We should be grateful it's someone with genuine respect in the industry like Paul Merton, rather than Stephen Mulhearn et al.

It was Denis, and the show's first producer, Paul Smith, who came up with the idea of It'll Be Alright on the Night (on the back of a discussion in thw LWT canteen about the famous Blue Peter "Lulu the Elephant" outtake). Denis Norden's wit is an acquired taste - you either like it or you don't - but IBAOTN was very much his show; he came up with the idea for it, picked all the clips, wrote the links, and presented it over a period of 29 years. Remember too that it never became a regular weekly series as Denis (correctly) reasoned that it would have gone stale too quickly in that form. By screening it as one-off specials, it meant that the quality of the show could be maintained.

Incidentally, it was also Denis who once mentioned to Paul Smith that if the BBC were to do their own outtake series, it would probably be called "Auntie's Bloomers". Paul Smith went on to set up Celdador and when they were approached by the BBC to produce their version of IBAOTN, Paul remembered Denis's suggestion as a title for the show - and that was how "Auntie's Bloomers" came about.

I've gone off Paul Merton a bit, as of late, just because he thinks he can get away with doing a weird, puzzled look on HIGNFY and saying anything surreal just to get a laugh. Oddly, I found him better on Room 101, because there were fewer people to interrupt or get the better of.

I'd rather Room 101 came back, which is meant to be on hiatus as well, isn't it? Not sure who could present that if it returned.

Would it be fair to say that Mr Norden would be happy to know that his programme is continuing in his absense?

I'd imagine Merton will be sporting "one of those" PDAs or Tablet PCs as opposed to the vintage clipboard.

Did the US show TV Bloopers before 1977 or did they copy us? I remember that first show, the funniest of them all. (And the butchered repeat later.) But nowadays there are too many shows doing this type of thing and too few amusing clips to fill them, sadly.

It seem that UK was one of the first to do it, with the USA not doing this type of concept until the 1982-83 season

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV's_Bloopers_&_Practical_Jokes

This might explane why No3 was full of US clips, I;m sure the BBC did something like this for its self back in the early 70's and shown at Xmas

Is this correct?
