when carlton began, how was there relationship with LWT? I know that thames had a bad relationship with LWT, so did carlton?
Also how long before carlton began did most people in London know about the change (i.e. did thames mention what was ) happen after they had gone) or was it left to to the local press?
Well i think when Carlton launched they were more co-operative with LWT in the way that they set up LNN to reduce news costs and have one service over the entire week. Prior to that LWT and Thames operated seperate news divisions with entirely different looks, with Fridays 6 o'clock bulletin the responsiblity of LWT. Hard to imagine anything like that when looking at Television today! It would all seem so expensive.
AFAIK Thames hated Carlton, as they wouldn't promote them until Thames' final week or so. But LWT were more than co-operative, they had no problem with promotion. But in 1991 when the licences were under review, LWT promised that they would set up a 7 day News service with whoever won the Weekday licence.
Luckily for them it was Carlton, as they had the money, but they didn't have the facilties. So in a way it secured the life of a News team based at LWT. If Thames did win, it would have been likely that a 7 day News service would run from Thames, as they were stronger in that area, as LWT News only became more common in the late 1980's and was nowhere near established as Thames News.
Also remember LWT allowed Carlton use their Transmission suite in the London Studios, as Carlton had no TV studios in London, due to the fact that they comissioned programmes to Independents.
But this was at a time when LWT was getting big, as they were helping Carlton, they were pratically starting GMTV, they had spun-off their Studios and created a new Production arm. (LWTP) It was also a year before LWT were bought up by Granada.
