Why do Sky News run Live at Five? What separates it from the news at 4 pm and the news at 6 pm?
I don't see why the five 'o clock hour of news should be specially named - Sky News at Ten and the Nine 'O Clock News seem to have their reasons, but Live at Five doesn't even have a specialised ident!

It's style is considerably different.
No biz news
Going live to more locations than the 4/6pm shows etc.
More features @ around 5:50
In depth interviews @ 5:30ish
Even the minor points like, after the first package, they say and 'coming up on live at five'
Whereas on 'Today' before the 1st package they say 'coming up on Sky News Today'
Very different from Sunrise for instance which is in 1/2 hour blocks.
Live at Five is actually quite different to the regular programming.
If you watch it then you will notice that they actually make an effort to go live to the majority of the stories they cover, hence the name.
Anyway, Live at Five has been going for ages now, they wouldn't close it down.
Before the graphics change they used to have a special bit dedicated to e-mails, only Sky News Today was the other programme to do that.
They also only used to release the results of the daily poll during Live at Five.
Live at Five was Sky's answer to an evening broadcast, only longer... it is different and they are not likely to get rid of it.

I never suggested they should get rid of it...I just couldn't see the difference between Live at Five and the other hours. Actually it never even occured to me that they go live to almost every report...I thought it was just there because it rhymed with 'Five'.
Live at Five has been on Sky News for the best part of ten years now, in fact I think it has been there since day one.
You may remember when Sky News first started there were feature programming almost every half hour. Only Sunrise and Live at Five were IIRC hour-long bulittens.
Nowadays Sky News have far more hour long bulittens, so Live at Five is less of a cornerstone of the schedule. And will be less so after the relaunch when the remaining feature programming goes.
