And next up the Inbetweeners Youtube account is now videoless. Clearly the show was offensive to bus wankers.

I'm wracking my brains to think of anything racially iffy in The Inbetweeners. Although thinking about it Rudge Park is the whitest school in the home counties. Though this is used as part of their nievety when encountering the outside world.

There's only two scenes I can think of that even reference race - mistaking a black man for a drug dealer and the French exchange student that 'doesn't like arabs' but in both those cases it's challenged or made to seem wrong.

Maybe a bit of YouTube over-zealousness? There's plenty in the series that someone would find offensive

I’m surprised The Inbetweeners didn’t get caught up in controversy a few years ago what with all the terms they use to describe women.

Then also I imagine some might find the jokes directed at Neil’s dad offensive as well

It is a comedy about teenage boys, that is how they are.

Indeed it turns out apparently Britbox have streaming rights to it now.
Surprised there wasn’t a disclaimer put up on Youtube to say as much (especially since say when football highlights are illegally uploaded and removed you normally see that X has copyrighted it) - not having it just fuels speculation that it’s the latest show to be censored.
Honestly the more I look at Twitter these days the more I think Jon Ronson’s excellent book ‘So you’ve been Publicly Shamed’ should be required reading before you get on there. My first reaction if I see a celebrity these days is ‘what are they being cancelled for’ more than wondering why they’re trending

I don't think it was ever full episodes on Youtube?

Just the best scenes which ultimately ended up with pretty much every scene being clipped up as a seperate video?

Channel 4 will be happy, seems they'll be selling a few thousand DVD sets this morning (it's going right up the Amazon popular chart)

Indeed DVDs seem to be the big winners at the moment. They probably haven’t sold as well as this for years.

I've voiced my frustration at streaming and DRM'd digital downloads for years due to the fact that they can be withdrawn at any time and you lose access to it (the BBC Store that's already been mentioned is a prime example), even if you've paid for it. People are starting to learn that now.

There is no such thing as "whiteface". To compare White Chicks to Blackface makes a mockery of the damage and pain it has caused.

Yes there is such a thing as whiteface. The term has been in currency for over a century and a half, and it has been a practice since the 19th century.

Whiteface doesn't exist in the context of what was being discussed. Clearly I was not denying that black people wear white make up, as we were discussing a film in which that very thing happens. But it doesn't have the same legacy of blackface. In fact when black people 'white up' it's often seen as an antidote to blackface.

We’re getting into dangerous territory now that old content is being removed seemingly without any actual guidelines. Ignoring or glossing over our social history is dangerous. TV shows and movies, even comedies, present a very real depiction of social attitudes in the time they were made and can be an important part of the ongoing conversation. In the same way any statues glorifying those involved in the slave trade should be moved to museums or exibitions and presented with context to help understanding and debate, rather than melted down and forgotten.

Disney+ have the right idea - include a clearly worded disclaimer with any problematic content. Their big mistake is not including Song of the South and making it subject to the same treatment. Whoopi Goldberg herself has called for it to be released many times and in on record offering to film an introduction to it explaining the racial issues it contains. It should be part of the discussion.

IMO Netflix, BritBox and the BBC need to start using clear disclaimers which are specific to any issues in a show. And I’m really hoping what we’re witnessing now is the start of a review process where broadcasters are looking at all content but will ultimately re-upload everything with disclaimers, context, even filters which recognise problematic historical content. I really hope this is the case and they’re not just removing things willy nilly “just in case”.

I think in terms of films and TV shows in general this is a sensible way forward, and in fact despite the hoo-ha about Gone With The Wind being taken down from HBO Max, they stated from the outset that it was only temporarily while they produced an introduction explaining the historical context.

However, I struggle to see how that would improve Little Britain and Come Fly With Me because in essence both shows are just a collection of problematic catchphrases the audience is pretty much encouraged to shout at each other. The entertainment is in the mockery of stereotypes, and there's not much beyond that.
