I was watching Breakfast this morning and there was a report which features 'Library Pictures'. Almost all my life when I've seen this being mentioned I've wondered what is meant by it! So can somebody tell me what they are.

Cheers
Gary.

Basically, they're exactly what their name suggests - theres a big library of filmed people, places, events etc. and when the news (or something else) needs to feature something that they haven't filmed themselves already, they get the 'pictures' from the library! (hope I've explained that ok!)

Library Pictures can sometimes be a vital source of information for news reports - only this past year have I realised myself the meaning of this, so you're not alone Gary! Smile

Anyway aren't library pictures usually shot by the fire service and the police etc. partly for their own internal use but also for news providers. It also stops an emergency area being flooded with camera crews (well it should in theory).

I thought library pictures were those shot by the companies in the past and relate to the subject but are not actual pictures taken when that particular story happens. They then just get them from the vaults and include them in reports.

Aren't they the same as the pictures the BBC has for well known people etc when they die so they can show past clips? I remember someone saying on TV that the BBC came to them in 1996 for some pics etc to include in their file on Diana.

'Library Pictures' are pictures stored in library (believe it or not) and not particularly related to a story.

Basically, say Princess Margaret is ill again. A report may be accompanied by pictures of her attending a ceremony a month ago for instance. To avoid confusion, they say they are 'Library Pictures' to show the pictures are taken a while ago.

US broadcasters tend to say 'File' footage - so do RTÉ in the Irish Republic.

I have also noticed a trend in not using the term 'Library Pictures' so much - it seems to have become unfashionable!

Library pictures are used more often than is flagged by an aston. If the reporter is talking about something specific but there are no pictures of that but pictures are used which may be confused with what actually happened, a 'Library Pictures' aston is used.

If companys flagged all shots which came from the library, probably about 70-80% of a typical report would have the aston burnt on
