Letterman was much better in its earlier days on NBC, and he used to do lots of innovative and fun things.
Who can ever forget the show where the viewing shot angle was rotated during the show? They would never do such a thing today on CBS.
Now it has become staid, formulaic and far less imaginative, and the banter with Paul is generally always of a trite nature.
As for The Tonight Show, it has not been the same, or as good, since Johnny left, and Leno always aims for the "trendy and hip" viewing audience with his continual risque style.
I love Letterman. Even though I may watch Leno when there's nothing on; i still prefer Letterman; just how the first half of the show is made of wierd games; wierd features and general chat and mock ads. You just cant beat items like 'Will it float' 'George W Bush's Joke that not a Joke' 'Dr Phil's Words of Wisdom' and the wierd topics of 'The Late Show Top 10'.
Only been watching the Late Show for the past two/three years and it has been great; the funniest thing ive seen in ages was last week when they announced that Casablanca was America's favourite film following a poll.
He said that they had found an unseen clip of the film. They shownt a clip of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman chatting across a bar and then cut to black and white footage of a man trying to push an ostrich that wouldnt move! It was hilarious!
Who are the intended audience and when does the shows go out in America.
Take the Late Show; its called the 'LATE' show; yet when they do outside stuff on the streets in daylight; so does it broadcast live like at 8pm; or is it recorded earlier in the evening and put out later like V Graham Norton is over here?
Correct me on this, but as far as I know it is actually on late because of the time difference between the east and west coast. Hence, it will be recorded earlier, and it's certainly not live. "Live on tape!" maybe...

Both shows are primarily intended for American audiences, but both are distributed worlwide.
As for timeslot, they both go out at about 11:30pm, right after the main evening news bulletin
on either network. When Dave was on NBC between 1982 and 1993 00:30, his show was
on broadcast at about 00:30, right after the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

"The Late Show With David Letterman" is usually taped "as live" at about 17:30, and then
shown six hours later. The only exception this, (AFAIK) is the Friday evening edition is
taped at about 20:00-21:00 on Thursday night. We see the Monday-Thursday shows
over here on ITV2, about 20 hours after their original broadcast on the CBS network.
The Monday night edition is shown here on Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
The Friday night edition, (taped on Thursday evenings in New York City) is broadcast
over here on Monday nights (or early Tuesday mornings) on ITV2.
I'd imagine it's a similar situation for the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno".

A good joke on last night's "Late Show", referring to Mike Tyson's recent bankrupcy, Dave
suggested . . . "Let me give you some financial advise, Mike. You've got to develop a grill!"
I can always happily watch Letterman and wet myself laughing at some of their stuff, whereas when I watch Leno, it is very rare that I laugh at all.
It's not like I am determined not to like Leno, cos I really wanted to - its one of the most famous shows on American TV, but I just don't find him funny. To be perfectly honest (although it may not be true), Tonight with Jay Leno looks like NBC went "Oh crap, CBS have a winning Late Night Show - quick - throw something together."
