Surprising how small the Countdown studio is - always thought there was a much bigger studio audience

That's a good point, I have hazy memories of that.
Though I think that stopped when the new set came into force.

I'm sure the audience seating used to be bigger, or at least laid out differently - didn't the camera used to move out at the end and be able to go through the middle of the audience seating?

That's right - Studio 4 is the same size as TLS1 (minus seating). Studio 3 (believe it or not) used to be the home of Emmerdale Farm prior to 1989.

Countdown used to be recorded in Studio 4, which is considerably larger.

Suspect they may have HD capable or HD upgradeable post production - the Quantel eQ is HD capable (though it is an option) Looks like an SD DigiBeta and an HD HDCam or HDCam SR deck in the eQ suite - so that may well be HD capable.
However all the cameras in the studios were decidely SD - and not exactly modern models. The Countdown studio look to be Thomson 1657s - which are being retired from most TV Centre studios.

That's a good site actually - thanks for the link. It looks like the technical infrastructure at Leeds is pretty up to spec (though is any of it HD?) Good to see that there are still proper production spaces available North of Elstree! Is there a similar site for Granada?

It's also worth noting that ITV Leeds now has Apple Final Cut Pro for video editing, which can be seen in one of the edit suites editing The Royal, which is certainly HD capable.

It's a children's programme on Boomerang:

I assume that the studio used for this is the one which was used for My Parents Are Aliens
