ITV seems to be getting alot better and some of its programmes are improving including Corrie.

I seem to have noticed a slight improvement, but nothing major, and there is still a lot of work to do. Coronation Street is great, but would benefit more if it had two episodes cut.

Totally Agree.

All episodes apart from 1 over 10 million is very good. I think the reason the Monday 7pm one wasnt over 10 million was because people forgot it was on at that time!

That's still higher than what Emmerdale would have got, which is great.

I think some of the jokes and storylines in Coro are far funnier than comedies such as the repetitive Little Britain , Catherine Tate ; or Ricky Gervais's toe-curling output.

There is some highbrow material in Coro; mostly originating from Roy and Ken. Makes a change from the constant "leave it aht" and "ah can'r believe ahm hearing this" exchanges of EE

No, I'm not joking. If you don't notice these elements in Coro, they must pass over you head Wink Seriously though, often Coro gets large audience-shares, so it be must have something that sets it apart from its competition

Well done to ITV - Whilst I feel strongly that presentation on the channel has lost it's way, it just shows that with the right programmes, ITV still can do it.

Afterlife, Prime Suspect, Touch of Frost, Bon Voyage, just a few superb programmes that would make fans of the "old ITV" proud.

I'm glad someone mentioned Afterlife - and I'm surprised it hasn't been discussed more on here. Whilst ITV does have many faults at the moment, it's nice to know they can actually come up with something original and ideas-driven. And it's bloody good! It would have been so easy to have put on another tawdry and formulaic detective / police drama, so credit where credit's due.

If only the over-dependence on soaps, and the predictable daytime schedules can be reviewed, programme-wise, ITV could look really good again.

Combine it with regional names appearing on idents, promotion of local programming, and more current affairs, and ITV could really start to shine again.

Lets look at the 'over-dependence on soaps' quote!
BBC One contains Eastenders and Neighbours (which is shown twice a day) also loosly throw in Casualty, Holby City and Doctors and Im sure you will find that there is more Soap on BBC One than ITV One these days!

ITV One only show Coronation Street and Emmerdale (and loosly The Bill) but I agree that the two major soaps are on maybe one episode per week too much than they should be.

You mention 'predictable daytime schedules' on ITV One but im sure if we actually look at what ITV was showing, say ten years ago, it wouldve been filled with umm.....soaps!!! And really dodgy imported soaps aswell... a few I remember were Falcons Crest, Young Doctors, A Country Practice, Shortland Street and Home and Away.(im sure there are many more!)

Im sure there is still room for a daytime soap like Shortland Street or Home and Away but ITV One's daytime schedule has surely improved over the years? The only programmes I would like to see return are Win, Lose or Draw, Keynotes or Supermarket Sweep and also the return of The Time The Place type programme but I assume this has been diluted into This Morning and Loose Women!

If anyone has a problem with their daytime schedule it is surely BBC One? How can a varied schedule contain so many programmes that all seem the same to the casual viewer? Everytime I turn over it is either antiques or auctions!!!!!!! Evil or Very Mad But it must be popular as ITV has just started their own version again!!!! Wink

Firstly, apologies for the delay on my reply Ohwhatanight.

I believe that ITV's evening schedule has become far too dependent on soaps, and offers little alternative to those who wish to watch something other than Emmerdale or Coronation Street. ITV should look to lose at least Tuesday and Thursday's Emmerdale, and reduce Monday's Coronation Street editions to one. These programmes are on so often that viewers now see these programmes in "real-time", and are no longer "must see" tv.

The risk is that one programme starts to leach viewers - what else do ITV have to replace them with? As a business, it is a huge risk to have to depend on a small number of products to carry your marketshare - this has to be spread. We would be fools to take comfort from the fact that the BBC are equally as soap-dependent.

For me, Emmerdale's hold on weeknight slot, locks as many viewers out, as it does in. I will always see what is on BBC1, as most of the time they offer a varied mix of programmes that are interesting and cover a range of subjects. I suspect that the BBC gains a more desirable share of viewers (to advertisers) if not the same volume as a soap can offer. This is part of ITV's current problems, not only are viewers falling, but often the viewer mix is not hugely desirable to advertisers, limiting the companies that wish to pay for airtime.

Being brave and accepting that in the short-term viewers may be lost is one that ITV needs to consider to shore-up a long-term future. Completely new programmes need to be introduced into the schedule, to offer something different to viewers, and to preserve the quality of key programmes.

Whilst an old saying, but how often does a prime-time programme on ITV inform, educate and entertain now?

Give the viewers more programming variety, reduce the exposure to soaps, get viewers thinking about something other than "the Dingles", and exploit the regional structure that connected ITV to its viewers like no other UK channel ever has.

The time to be bold is now....

I completely agree Roger Mellie. People tend to dismiss the show as mindless drivel, put it's obvious from many of the lines that characters like Roy, that the show is an intelligently written comedy drama. I don't even want to call it a soap, because that would be comparing it to EastEnders which isn't even in the same league.

Cool Deffo. Coro has shades of Les Dawson, Victoria Wood, Peter Kay and Royle Family about it (perhaps not surprising since they all came from Greater Manchester)!
