They did mention on BBC News that they were considering introducing an ID card to accompy the badge. Which seems rather pointless as there must be thousands already in circulation and I can't see existing badge owners getting an ID card. Rather defeats the point of introducing them. I happen to own two of the white badges legitimately and have the letters addressed to me from 1997 & 1999 somewhere. It's interesting to note the subtle changes made to the badge over the years mainly to the ship.

AIUI the BBC have a record of EVERY Blue Peter badge (officially) issued. The Blue Peter correspondence unit was set up by Biddy Baxter, and keeps a record of every letter sent out, so that viewers shouldn't receive a duplicate stock letter. (Biddy once got the same letter twice from an author - Enid Blyton I think - and was very disappointed. She didn't want BP viewers to suffer the same)

Talking of John Leslie - I have far less of a problem with people selling badges on E-Bay than presenters bribing police officers / traffic wardens with Blue Peter badges to avoid getting tickets - something IIRC him and other presenters have confessed to doing!

Maybe I have dubious morals then, but I see no problem with selling them, if people are dumb enough to pay those sorts of prices! (just been looking at them on ebay - amazing!)

I do have one, complete with accompanying letter, somewhere. As far as I'm concerned it's my property to do with as I wish. Not that I WILL....but I can see the temptation! Shocked

The issue isn't the sale of the badge as an object per se - it is the use of a purchased badge to gain free entry to locations that would otherwise cost money.

The phrase is "Blue Peter badge winners can get in free" - not "Owners of a Blue Peter badge can get in free". You only qualify if you won your badge - not if you bought it on ebay as a season ticket.

The arrangement is to benefit badge-winners, not badge-owners, and it is just a real shame that people are going against the principle of the scheme. I suspect photo ID will be introduced.

But assuming bad faith is also against the principle of the scheme. Even more so than buying badges, I would say.

I got a badge in 1978ish for suggesting they showed us how the programme was made, which they did, lost it years ago, wonder if i can get a replacement so my kids can use it

only joking, i haven't got kids, i bet quite a few parents give their badge to their child though

I couldn't help noticing this this morning...

...I can't help noticing a similarity in the picture MediaGuardian used, suspiciously similar.

Probably from Wikipedia, which also used your original picture as a source back in 2004:
