'Fraid not - the previous idents were in widescreen as well but never shown. UK Gold text (p261) was recently asked the situation on widescreen but they said they had no plans - stupid considering much of their output (certainly from the Beeb) is now in widescreen.
Nice to see Lambie-Nairn's site has been redesigned, the old one was a nightmare to get around.

Probably a BBC rule that all idents must be made in widescreen, and when the original idents were introduced in 1997 they played it safe and made them widescreen just in case a decision was made to make the channel w/s. As it wasn't, we never saw them in widescreen!
