All the UK TV Idents are widescreen, so maybe they are gearing up to a switch to widescreen!!!!
'Fraid not - the previous idents were in widescreen as well but never shown. UK Gold text (p261) was recently asked the situation on widescreen but they said they had no plans - stupid considering much of their output (certainly from the Beeb) is now in widescreen.

Nice to see Lambie-Nairn's site has been redesigned, the old one was a nightmare to get around.

'The problem was that the audience perceived the channel as being worthy but dull. The identity that we created in 1993 completely reversed these negative perceptions of the channel...'

Erm...1993?! I could have sworn we've recently celebrated their 10th birthday!

Ahh, yes, thanks! I'll blame Microsoft - they took over the association of .mov files on my PC!

Probably a BBC rule that all idents must be made in widescreen, and when the original idents were introduced in 1997 they played it safe and made them widescreen just in case a decision was made to make the channel w/s. As it wasn't, we never saw them in widescreen!
