Where is Lambie-Nairn's originality? The UK Gold idents have the same feel as the Carlton and BBC Prime idents! And as for the new BBC TWO... don't get me started.

The new look THAMES logo is also quite unoriginal.

I think that they have lost their way and more idents should be made in house.

what!!!! Lambie Nairn are the best in the business if you ask me.

The BBC TWO ident is very original no other channel has anything like it

UK Gold is great it may be similar in style, thats cause thats they look they wanted.

Take BBC News you find any other look similar from Before LN stepped in.

Doesn't Mr Lambie-Nairn take a brief, like any other designer, from the broadcaster on what identity they want to convey? Its likely that he also takes a lot of advice from demographic researchers and focus groups too.

The channels you mention are kind of pulling at the same audience, so they must run the risk of looking like a homogenized mass of light entertainment channels.

Designers go in and out of fashion though. Maybe 2002 will see something new?

Here is an explination of How Lambie Nairn do their work:
The way we go about the business of delivering innovative and effective solutions to our clients' branding needs may be summarised as a simple two-fold process: Creative Strategy and Strategic Creativity. All the strategic planning we carry out is directed towards developing strong and single-minded propositions that lead to an outstanding creative solution. Equally, all creative work is undertaken in response to a clearly articulated, agreed brief. The third crucial pillar of our approach is the close working relationship we develop with our clients through the formation of a project team. In addition to the key client contacts this team is made up of strategic, creative and account management personnel who orchestrate and co-ordinate all activities to ensure a successful outcome.

You've picked bad examples there. The music on Carlton is simular to UK Gold, whereas the majority of the BBC Prime idents are simular to UKGold.

The BBC TWO idents are not original, well, not original enough for £30,000 an ident!

Umm, actually, the last three do look similar. The use of a white overlaid corporate logo with a graphical background. Theres a certain continuity to the 'layered' effect he uses.

I mean, obviously its a successful formula as they are very solidly identifiable images.

Interesting that the use of the purple box for BBC2 might herald a change in direction for LN's in-house 'look'.

you are taking a very generalised view there gavin.

The logo is usually dictated by the company and in order to look right on the background nuteral colours of White and black must be used.

UKtv obviously wanted all the presentation to follow the BBC's format, so that was out of their control, Carlton have a centralised logo which makes it different as well as the glow on the star itself, as for BBC Prime if you watch the idents they are different to evrything else
it isnt random splashes of colours, and they are to surve a purpose, as for the BBC Prime logo, i dont need to explain.

As a trainee designer i study this sort of thing, so i'm not just a ravign loon.

As for music in idents, Lambie Nairn dont do the music most of the time, an outside composer makes music to suit the ident itself.

Does LN do the Channel 5 idents? I doubt it because they're original!

What a pathetic reply Look at their website to see what they have done, and see other sites like English&Pocket who do ITV's Pathetic excuse for idents.

I agree that Lambie Nairn are very much better than other designers. You only have to look at some of the cr*p that E&P, Ballistixx (YTV) and so on produce to see how good they are.

I have to confess that the white-logo-superimposed-on-swirly-graphic-background look is beginning to date now, but it's still infinitely better than a lot of the competition...

LN is quite good (although IMO if he'd worked to the ITV 1989 brief with updated graphics they'd be unbeatable, rather than the current ITV generics). The THAMES logo isn't brilliant but at least its more colourful than the last one, though to be honest I think the original and best THAMES logo with all the london landmarks should have been carried on and the buildings just updated cos all the London landmarks have been cleaned up since the 80s - maybe find room for buildings like The Dome, Canary Wharf and City Hall when it arrives. Same tune of course DUN,DUN,DUN,DUN,DUNN,DUN,DUNN,DUNNNNNNNN which to me could be sung to as:
DUN,DUN,DUN,DUN,YOU'RE,WATCH,ING,THAMESSSSS.

Anyway, I've tried to do a mock of an updated classic Thames logo and it is really hard to do, any budding LNs out there want to have a go? Anyway I prefer this new Thames logo to the black one because there was no reflection on the old one and it just had one landmark, and it was dark. Basically all LN has to do is add some landmarks and then it would be good - a nice animated endboard would be nice like the old Central ones in the early 90s. Or even better return front caps - I think Whataday was saying about how people write to HTV complaining about network shows well front caps would clear up that confusion wouldnt it? I still like LWTs blinds frontcaps (not the ident tho i like that too).

Wow, I've gone on and on - so I'll but I do offer up a challenge to anyone to design a new Thames mock as there are hardly any anywhere (probably because they're so hard to do!)
