ITV has confirmed it's return in a press release but haven't named a host.

So, it's going to be upgraded with fancy new technology, and it seems Gordon Burns almost certainly won't be presenting. Could be the foundations for yet another old show ruined by a complete '21st century' makeover, but who knows.

As for the possibility of Ben Shepherd being host - that's probably the most uninspired choice they could come up with. He's already been the face of a number of other shows.

They should instead consider someone less well known (perhaps someone who'd come across as more authoritative) who can make the show their own and properly establish themselves as the host of The Krypton Factor, not just as a general TV show presenter.

I hope they leave celebrities alone for this one.

Sadly, if Ben Shepherd is hosting, I can already see it being branded as "All Star Krypton Factor" featuring celeb nobodies.

Mark Austin would be brilliant.

Have you got The Krypton Factor?

The Krypton Factor, one of Britain’s most iconic shows, returns to ITV1 for 2009 with a 21st century makeover.

The stakes are bigger, the competition is harder and the pressure has never been higher as members of the public are invited to test their physical and mental abilities in a range of rigorous mental and physical challenges.

Contestants will have to be smarter, faster and more resilient if they are going to succeed in the competition.

It’s open to anyone who thinks they have what it takes to succeed in TV’s toughest quiz and walk away with the coveted Krypton Factor crown.

Auditions will be held all over the country to find the right contestants

A series of rounds will test mental agility, observation, physical ability, intelligence and general knowledge. And yes, the Assault Course will be back! It's mean, it's menacing and as tough as ever, but with new challenges, twists and technology.

Think you're up to the challenge?

Auditions start very soon, so if you've got the mind and the muscle and you think you've got what it takes to be part of The Krypton Factor, email thekryptonfactor@itv.com or, if you prefer, you'll soon be able to apply online right here.

Ben Shepherd seems to be completely the wrong choice - they need someone with a bit of authority.

And let's hope the awful "Super Challenge" isn't a feature here.

Ben Shepherd?

Well I suppose ITV's roster of talent isn't extensive so they haven't got many candidates to choose from. I suppose it could be worse - it could be Vernon Kay.

Let's hope they learn from the BBC's mistakes and Five's success with the Superstars format.

The BBC tried to re-invent it with Johnny Vaughan (with Suzi Perry making the best of it), whilst Five did a far more faithful recreation - and it was far more watchable.

Gordon Burns is, realistically, not the right person to front it on its return - but Ben Shepherd doesn't strike me as right either...

Well whoever hosts it, you can almost be sure they won't have this round in it these days.

I love his apology for missing Channel Television from the map. Laughing

Considering the rounds changed alot during the later years, such as Double Take being replaced by the mini dramas where the contestants had spot the continuity errors, or the round where they cycle on the things and hit the coloured buttons at the end which was replaced by the flight simulator, it'd be interesting to see which of these will make it into the new version.

I'd agree about Mark Austin hosting the programme, it'd suit it well.

I've never seen this show before, but judging by that clip it needs a makeover.
