CITV is part of ITV's commitment to Public Service Broadcasting, but at the same time ITV is a commerical channel, not a charity and has to react to competition otherwise it could have a negative affect on revenues later on. Ofcom says ITV have to broadcast 8 hours a week of Childrens programming, and AIUI they're doing more than that at the moment, as long as they're doing 8 hours, no-one can stop them...
But ITV must realise that if they don't provide PSB, the BBC will have a monopoly? That's handing viewers to CBBC on a plate. And with the links to Channel 4 severed, they don't have a second terrestrial channel to offload things on to.
It's not enough just to say X amount of hours, these hours have to be the most viable for the audience, otherwise CITV won't get the viewers.
There was nothing wrong with the cookery shows being on BBC2, but move them to BBC1 and the latter appears to be extending its "daytime fare" into the weekends.
Though 5 years ago at the peak of SM:tv Live who would have thought that after 30 odd years that there would no longer be a Saturday morning kids show on ITV, maybe it was an experiment that ran for over 30 years, who knows...
It's been inevitable for a long time, children's programmes on terrestrial are getting very low viewing figures, kids are all watching multichannel. (I would expect kids to be one of the highest % age group to have access to multichannel)
We've seen BBC1's programmes shifted to BBC2, we've also seen BBC2's sunday offerings being done and dusted by 10am rather than going on all morning, we've also seen BBC2's school holiday programming being greatly reduced, I'm not surprised ITV as a commercial channel has followed suit
On the other side of the coin, with The Championship not on at the moment, CITV Sunday seems to have been reinstated
what with five collecting CD:UK from ITV, will five now be looking at starting a saturday morning children's amagazine show - to compliment CD:UK. They could always go with the idea of a programme that ITV2 used to have - Bedrock - that was a well decent early evening show and I could see that working on a Saturday morning.
so what do we have now that's decent on Saturday mornings...
BBC1 - Cookery
BBC2 - Children's
ITV1 - Cookery
4 - T4
five - pre-school programmes and US imports
Sky Sports - Soccer AM/Cricket AM
Well until some channel comes up with a Bedrock style, or a No73 style or a Swapshop style saturday morning show again - I will be watching Soccer/Cricket AM - fun, frolicks, sport and ,music - decent for a Saturday morning!!!
If RTL/Bertlesmann (five) really want to start gaining viewers from the more traditional ITV/BBC market then there is now no better opportunity than on Saturday mornings. they could start off with a 60 minute news programme, followed by Pre-school series, flb Magazine show f/b CD:UK f/b some sort of sport shows.
i.e. (now I know some of you don't like this but I am trying to show a point here so please bear with me....)
0600 News; weather
0700 Pre-school series (Milkshake)
0900 Bedrock
1100 CD:UK
1200 News; weather
1215 Kick-Off (a bit like ITV's old On The Ball and BBC'sFootball Focus
1315 .....
I don't think the BBC should
ever
take your advice on that
I, also, agree that all CBBC/CBeebies should be on BBC2 - more flexability in the schedules than on BBC1
