Although it's not a soap, Frasier did quite well as a spin off from Cheers, and won a fair few TV awards, but to my knowledge, there haven't been any soap spin-off (or soap "bubble") that I can think off that has been entirely successful or lasted long.

Was Hollyoaks a spin off of Brookside ? (I stopped watching Brookside in 1985, and have never seen Hollyoaks, so be gentle)

Not that I i've ever watched Hollyoaks, but is it not set in Cheshire, and Brookside in Merseyside?

Everybody on Merseyside say they're from Cheshire, don't they ? Very Happy

Brookside / Hollyoaks ... not a spin off as such, but both were created by Phil Redmond, and (AFAIK) have shared some sets in the past.

No, just made by the same company. Brookie had the Debbie & Damien spin off while Hollyoaks have had a few spin-off series that never really stuck.

And apologies Cando if I got any "facts" wrong. I know BBC3 was always back to one drama series a year a while ago before the closure plans were first announced which obviously has limited their commissioning options.

Damon and Debbie and the Late Night Hollyoaks were Bubbles though which were never meant to 'stick' or be long running. They were stories with a beginning, middle and end. Same with all the EE series such as Ricky & Bianca.

Hollyoaks and Brookside have occasionally shared characters too I believe.

Knots Landing spun off from Dallas and ran for 14 years. Not bad going...

Last time they done this (as far as I can remember) was the special 'Eastenders: Ricky & Bianca' following them in a spin off after they left.

I think it might have been a short series rather than a one off, I remember a guitar version of the Eastenders theme, and can't imagine it done very well... considering it's taken them this long to do it again.

I feel DTC had taken the emphasis the Moon's had before the Carters came along, they're no longer in the limelight in the Vic and these gritty storylines have taken the shine off them a bit I feel, so this spin off will be interesting.

Completely forgot about that one! Gary and Valene (and Lucy v/v) often appeared in Dallas.

Back to Kat and Alfie: undeniably, there is chemistry between the actors and perhaps it will do very well. I can't think of another set of characters in EE that would be credible as spin-offs.

Rumour has it that
one lucky Walford resident is about the win big on the lottery
which could have something to do with Kat and Alfie's travels.

This and "Cuffs" are low budget prewatershed dramas replacing Waterloo Road.

Considering they're both replacing a teen skewed drama, I wonder if this EE spin-off will have teenage sub-plots?

If this is "successful" it'll go to the producers heads and we'll have spin-offs everywhere...

What's the difference between successful and "successful"?
