I know someone who works on the show and my understanding is that, yes, there is an element of prepping the guests on the show which may leave them a certain amount wound up, but I guess that would be argued to be part of making the programme watchable.

Whatever the arguments for or against it, I believe it's pointless blaming the show for this altercation. People who appear on the show must have at least some awareness of how the show works.

And to say the attack wouldn't have happened if this man hadn't appeared? How exactly does he know that? There are so many factors beyond the show in this man's life situation that may well have equally led him to boil over and commit this offence.

I'm afraid your specific charges against JK show that you are almost as out of touch as the patronising judge who (by his own admission) was 'forced' into watching ONE episode in order that he could understand the case.

JK's unique selling point is that he makes idiots, thugs and bigots squirm by laying into them - verbally - even though they are guests on his show. Seldom in the plethora of the genre does one see the presenter not suffering fools gladly.

That USP was refreshing when JK started. A lot of his idiots, thugs and bigots need that sort of talking to. However, in recent weeks there does seem to have been a trend to go beyond that and JK seems to be using the guests as pawns for his own ego; not allowing them to have their say (which goes against everything he claims to stand for), and with Kyle's voice becoming ever louder it seems The Jeremy Kyle Show is living up to its name in every way. Jon Culshaw has got him down to a tee.

I have no clue why you would bring Trisha into this. She quit ITV over where her show would be taped and how much she was to be paid (allegedly), so its quite wrong of you to hold her up as some kind of moral arbiter.

I thought the main issue was editorial control and who produced the show - she wanted Town House TV to make some episodes and have more say about content. ITV refused. Five allowed her to make the show as she wanted - ie. with more human interest stories, but admittedly it was a bit of a ratings disaster and we saw the lurch back towards the ITV format after a short time.

Easy to knock, but the public lap it up. The public gets what the public wants...

I'm slightly more concerned at yet another stupidly lenient judge.

"In recent weeks"? That's not what you were suggesting when you opened this thread, and Culshaw hasn't been on air in the last couple of months.

I happened to see a JK yesterday afternoon and it was a particularly good show about gang violence. I confess it made me shed a tear.

Sorry Simon but I'm not going to let you squirm out of this argument. You seem to be agreeing with what I've said and what the judge said, and you can't have it both ways.

From what I read from Trisha herself, editorial control was not one of her grievances.

He may not have, but the observations he made in Dead Ringers were relevant at the time. His constant barks to the camera "I'm Jeremy Kyle" every few seconds were a perfect pickup on how JK likes to namecheck himself at any given opportunity. In the early days JK would introduce a guest by saying "it's XXX on THE SHOW ladies and gentlemen" but that soon became "it's XXX on the JEREMY KYLE show".

Combine that with constant reminders "it's my name on the wall", "button it I'm speaking!", and a voice which has got even louder in recent episodes and there is a case to suggest he does revel in his own self-importance.

You will always find a way round anything I say anyway, so let's not rob you of your moment.

Where I come from (another JK quotation!) Trisha wouldn't have wanted Town House to produce the show if she didn't want any say over content.

Why on earth are you watching the Jeremy Kyle show on such a regular basis that you have noticed all this stuff?

Fair enough - call it lack of effective opposition from BBC1!

Stupid people are entertaining - that's why I love the show.

A lot of people who knock it seem to think that the people are watching it are the same as those who are on it. That is not the case.

And to be fair to them too, they do tend to stay away from the chair-throwing that goes on with Jerry Springer and the like. Jeremy makes it clear he won't stand for violence or aggression - I've seen instances in the past where he has asked people to leave because they weren't acting appropriately. That said, I'd say a sizeable majority of the people who appear on it do come out better at the other end.

Do you not feel even slightly ashamed making a comment like that?

Sadly you are right about those people watching JK being in a different level intellectually to those appearing on it. Which is the point the judge was trying to make - in Victorian times it was freak shows and the stocks, now it is the Jeremy Kyle show.

But security weren't able to stop these two guests nutting each other, were they? And if that could happen between two love rivals in such close proximity it must only be a matter of time before the same thing happens to JK when he gets too close to a guest he is laying into. Don't say we didn't warn you, Jezza.
