This is absolutely ridiculous.
If the BBC doesn't want these sort of personalities hosting their shows, they shouldn't employ them in the first place, not drop them because they're getting a bit of bad press. What impression does that give of the corporation to young upcoming talent??
Another perfect example of the Daily Mail/Mail on Sunday getting away with blowing a small incident out of proportion and creating a scandal that didn't exist. How that f*cking awful excuse for a newspaper is so popular, i'll never know.
Hopefully Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand will find other broadcasters to work for, some that have a bit more backbone and not afraid to defend and encourage edgy humour.

Most people hadn't heard it. When they did they complained. Logical?
I would suggest that a significant proportion of those who complained haven't heard it, and of those who did hear it a significant proportion heard excerpts out of context. I haven't heard it so I can't comment on the content of the show.
I have very little time for people who deliberately seek out something which they know they will find offensive just so they can be offended by it. I hope OFCOM and the BBC Trust will bulk reject these additional complaints which arrived so long after the broadcast after the bandwagon started rolling.
In the wider scheme of things, there are actually two issues here:
1) The leaving of potentially offensive messages on Andrew Sachs's answering machine.
Mr Sachs has accepted apologies from Brand and Ross and has no desire to take it further. Therefore this part of the matter is resolved.
2) The broadcast of these calls on Radio 2
These were *pre-recorded* calls. A producer has taken the decision to broadcast them. If anybody should be suspended or falling on their sword, it's the producer who decided that the material was suitable for broadcast rather than the talent, who likely would have behaved entirely differently on a live programme.
I think you have summed it up well there Steve. A good 98% of these complaints will purely be from over ego's getting on the band wagon and probably just don't like either of the two presenters. Personally i think Brand has done the right thing by leaving the BBC as should Ross. If the Corporation cannot stand by and support it's staff in difficult circumstances it's not worth being there. They are Comedians, it is in the nature of their job to push the boundaries otherwise it wouldn't be comedy. I really do hate this culture we live in of they messed up sack them attitude. Both have apologised, this should close the matter, not keep digging for more blood. Editorially someone has made a mistake, but, it happens. People are only human and mistakes are a way of life we cannot change. All we can do is learn from them.

Picking up on the above and other comments can I suggest the radio and general apsects are discussed & debated over in Birdsong @ Metropol. The thread URL is...

...then this thread can be left for discussion related to TV aspects if appropriate.

Yep, still scheduled in at the moment. I see the lottery has been brought forward to 10.35 - was initially on after Speed. Apart from on NI who are still showing it at 12.25.
NI also don't seem to be showing HIGNFY at all on Friday - don't they normally put it on after Wossy?

I think both presenters have rightly been taken to task over their behaviour. However, I do fing ITV News's reporting of the story interesting. Leading with it over the past couple of days (and being highly critical of both Brand, Ross and the BBC) they seem to be baying for Ross's blood - and sacking. ITV have been after signing up Ross for some time - if he is sacked by the BBC I certainly wouldn't bet against ITV1 being first in line with a cheque book...

Or he could go back to Channel 4 and assist Brand on Ponderland.
