Brand has announced his intention to resign from BBC Radio Two tonight.

Well there were only 2 complaints after the broadcast. It wasn't until the mail piped up a whole week later that the mock outrage kicked in and the bandwagon started rolling. Coincidence?

Most people hadn't heard it. When they did they complained. Logical?

Didn't you find the "He f*cked your granddaughter" comment offensive?

It's not "mock outrage". Would you like your sexual partners to be discussed on national radio?

Resignation was the least Brand could do bearing in mind his moral turpitude.

I would suggest that a significant proportion of those who complained haven't heard it, and of those who did hear it a significant proportion heard excerpts out of context. I haven't heard it so I can't comment on the content of the show.

I have very little time for people who deliberately seek out something which they know they will find offensive just so they can be offended by it. I hope OFCOM and the BBC Trust will bulk reject these additional complaints which arrived so long after the broadcast after the bandwagon started rolling.

In the wider scheme of things, there are actually two issues here:

1) The leaving of potentially offensive messages on Andrew Sachs's answering machine.

Mr Sachs has accepted apologies from Brand and Ross and has no desire to take it further. Therefore this part of the matter is resolved.

2) The broadcast of these calls on Radio 2

These were *pre-recorded* calls. A producer has taken the decision to broadcast them. If anybody should be suspended or falling on their sword, it's the producer who decided that the material was suitable for broadcast rather than the talent, who likely would have behaved entirely differently on a live programme.

Tell that to the baying pack at the Mail, Sun and Express, and Outraged from Taunton.

The whole thing has been blown out of proportion, it's ridiculous. I think Gordan Brown has better issues to be spending him time on don't you? Like getting the country out of the fu**ing mess he's driven it into.

Yeah, what Ross & Brand said to dear old Manuel was terrible and unfunny but if every comedian who belted out a bit of ill-judged comedy was sacked there wouldn't be any comedians at all. I find it ironic how a year ago the media were on their high horse declaring Russel Brand would never make it in America because they'd find him too offensive. Now they're chasing him out of Britain with pitchforks and torches. Rolling Eyes

What I find objectionable is that they did not seek Andrew Sach's permission before broadcasting what they did.

Comedy is highly subjective. What one person regards as "ill judged", others may not; some people may find it offensive, some not. With that in mind, they ought to have asked Andrew Sachs for his opinion, and more importantly his permission to broadcast the message; not just as a matter of ethics, but manners too.

If Andrew had consented, I wouldn't have minded what Brand and Ross did (although personally I don't find them funny). Some people would have complained still I would imagine-- but we all know what Brand's/Ross's style is like.

However they didn't consult Andrew Sachs; it was Brand's, Ross's and their producer's arrogance in thinking they didn't have to, that irks me.

I believe Andrew Sachs was consulted, but there are conflicting reports about whether he gave his consent or not.

Ah right, I wasn't aware of that... however a newspaper report I saw today, stated that his agent had refused permission on his behalf? Jakki Brambles on Loose Women yesterday also stated that Andrew Sachs hadn't been consulted Confused No doubt inquiries will clarify things.

Either way, anything that teachs Brand and Ross a bit of humility, can't be a bad thing Wink

I was expecting this... in fact I was expecting Film 2008 to be pulled last night but it went ahead.

Quite frankly, it serves them right. To be honest, Radio 2 has gone downhill with them trying to cater for a younger audience with the likes of Brand, Ross, Chis Evans and Dermot O'Leary.

IMO Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross are not really Radio Two material - Russell Brand is more Radio One material if you ask me.

With the closure of Saga Radio and Radio 2 attempting to get a younger audience on board, it seems there is nothing left for the more mature listener, many of whom live on their own and only have the radio for company most of the time.

I take your point about Radio 2 getting in more 'Radio 1' DJs in. However there are still older DJs on Radio 2, which I feel appeal to 'mature' listeners: Terry Wogan, Ken Bruce, Brian Matthews, Johnny Walker and so on.

Disgraceful getting rid of Jimmy Young IMO though...
