Good news!

But it doesn't say if Caroline Quentin or Julia Sawalha will be joining him.

Jonathan Creek revived

BBC1 plans to bring back detective comedy-drama Jonathan Creek after almost five years for a Christmas special.
Pre-production has begun on a one-off 90-minute edition of the show, with Alan Davies reprising the title role as a designer of magic tricks who solves mysterious crimes.

Creator David Renwick, who penned all 25 episodes of the show in its original run in BBC1's Saturday night line-up from 1997 to early 2004, is writing a script with an eye to filming it in the summer.

"After a five year break I think we're all looking forward to getting Creek back on the screen, and the BBC appear to be quite excited, so fingers crossed," he said.

The show, which won a Bafta for best drama in 1998, was produced by the BBC's entertainment department and championed by the late producer Verity Lambert, with whom Renwick also collaborated on his recent BBC1 project Love Soup.

I thought Davies didn't want to reprise the role? He's been known to get, er.. cross with getting called "Creek" in the street.

Oh well, if the money's right...

Part of me wonders if the murder victim will be a dead tramp with no ear.

I was thinking after watching One Foot In The Grave the other night what other work David Renwick was planning on doing.. if true, it's great he's reprising Jonathan Creek.

I don't know of any other writer who can put mystery with situation comedy like him. Admittedly it's vice-versa with Jonathan Creek but still works.

Well I don't think his career has hardly moved on since, so I guess he has little choice.

He's got QI, which I'm a huge fan of, so he's got that for another 20 years, until we reach series Z. And the reason he hated being called Creek is because a) he had just been to the funeral for producer Verity Lambert and was presumably quite emotional; b) he was slightly tipsy; and c) I think anyone who is associated with a character would hate to be called it, because someone is too ignorant to realise that the character doesn't exist. Look at poor Richard Wilson.

Guess that's Christmas Day sorted then, another revival to secure the ratings. Not that I have anything against Jonathan Creek, but it's a shame the BBC still can't find a new series to put in its place.

Are you sure they call him "creek", and he's not mishearing? Wink

Speaking of which, how could the said tramp get his ear bitten off, wonder what fantastical plot they could think of for that Wink Get Alan drunk, see what he can dream up.

More likely to be on Christmas Eve (as in 1998) or on Boxing Day (as in 2001). A bit too heavy for Christmas Day perhaps. I seem to remember when Midsomer Murders was shown on Christmas Day it did terribly.

Do you think Caroline Quentin or Julia Sawalha will return? As much as I love Julia, I thought Caroline was his best onscreen partner. And with Tony Head back in the country he could comeback as the magician.
