Perhaps the second most hated person on this forum (after Lorraine Heggessey) has left ITV:

Not sure that the celeb idents will have a much longer life really, especially now with the departure of Hytner. He certainly talked a good job but don't think he was that succesful really, the celeb idents could and should have been executed much more effectively.

Also, ITV don't seem to have that many golden handcuffs deals with celebs any more, so not sure of the relevance of these people being the "face of ITV".

I'd rather see 2 or 3 nicely animated computer generated idents, preferably in a style like the Carlton Hearts. Or at least extend the theme of geographical idents with the 4 blocks like the Carlton regional idents.

Every September for the last two years have seen a new batch of idents released and a new set of presentation for the channel, hopefully this will be a trend continued this year and the celebs can be put to bed.

I think he's more of a one trick horse - when he was at C5 he masterminded their first big presentation revamp at the end of 1999...and it was exactly the same 'face of Channel 5' type stuff that he brought to ITV in 2002. It didn't last long on C5, I'm hoping it won't last long on ITV either.

It's a shame really that those celebrity idents were introduced because they tarnished what, depiste completely disbelieving in a national ITV1 idea, I have to accept was a damn good presentation set. And the small number of CGI idents they had to complement it were brilliant.

It's a shame though that it rather went downhill a year later when 'ITV1 generic MKII' was introduced. I don't really get what's 'more classy' about the 'glassy', 'more 3D' pres they've used since then; it IMO just made things look really tacky. Or was it just designed to detract from the dire quality of the celebrity idents?

I think also though that the 'celeb culture' type trend is starting to die out now (hey, perhaps people will even start saying 'celebrity' again one day?). Certainly those idents have dated really badly.

I just hope there aren't more people idents to follow.

Indeed. And if the Carlton hearts were still in use now, almost 5 years after their introduction, I still don't think they'd look that bad. The 'Carlton' regional idents are quite good though. I did hope that maybe they were a pilot of something which might eventually have been adopted over the whole network, but that doesn't seem to have been the case.

I think the way for ITV to go is to get away from the celebritie idents and use the idea that has been given to them in the form of the 4 squares. As ITV2's are flat, I think that ITV1 should go with the cubes that will also tie in with ITV News.

The idea of them being around everywhere is a great idea, perhaps with them being able to communicate with each other if you gather what i mean and animate in good situations, but always come together at the end.
The logo would be simply the old flat logo rather than the glassy look (on idents a light/shine effect may be added like the old smoke 'itv' branded endboards from about 2000).

They could have done one for Euro 2004 where the cubes are giant hovering over 4 of the stadiums creating a fix over each of the stadiums (sort of like UFO's send the ray down to what they are going to capture), the cubes then start to move towards each other to join up to form the logo, pulling the stadium with them (with shots of the crowds confused and making noises), before the ITV1 squares join up to create the logo with a birds eye view seeing the logo and the 4 stadiums next to each other with the crowd cheering.

At least it could have been used throughout the coverage rather than the england bulldog!

But something like that I would say would give the channel more credibility.
They could also do their new season promo with the cubes bouncing and flying through studios, around presenters and playing mischief in the shots of shows!

I for one am very excited about this. Perhaps this will spell an end to the dark invasion of celebrities onto our beloved idents?

I've always been a big fan of loud, colourful, grand sets of idents which really make an impression onto me as a viewer. I'm hoping that this sort of presentation will make a comeback once Jim Hitler is out of the way.

Indeed. Under ITV1 generic mk1, there was at least two non-celeb versions that I can recall, but now there's just one (save for long/short variants), and a tacky looking one at that!

Indeed. I've also been hoping that ITVplc would take on this idea. Fingers crossed!

Does this mean that adverts for Barclays Bank will now feature "the faces of Barclays" - presumably bank managers? Smile
