The 5 FILM went into a break, and subsequently 5 BREAKING NEWS caption came up. After the Breaking News, the film went back on.
5 NEWS, As I have said before, was fantastic with the speed of the bulletin. They were one of the fastest BREAKING NEWS i've seen.
Well Done to the crew at 5NEWS

Interesting that they did it during an ad-break. I suppose commercial channels have the advantage of scheduled programme breaks, so an interruption to their film is more easy to justify.

Also 5 News is currently produced by ITN - who will have had a news presence at the trial to service their ITN News Channel, and so (like BBC News) will have been expecting (and planning) to cross live ASAP.

I suppose, but ITV ITN was considerably slower at bringing the news. They didn't have a BREAKING NEWS caption, as, well, it wasn't then!
After watching 5 NEWS, I turned over to ITV, CITV was just going into a break, so I thought ITV ITN's coverage would be on...
...it wasn't. I had to wait until after Sabrina, the teenage witch had fisnihed, and CITV went officially off air.
This was not good for ITV at all.
4 NEWS, I don't know about...
...I don't think 4 NEWS really care about news much, they just like old people programmes.

Yeah, but not sure if a channel primarily broadcasting to young kids at that time of day should have a report of this content. Adults would be unlikely to be watching anyway, than, say if it had happened during primetime.

It was easy for the BBC to show the news report on BBC One due to CBBC being on BBC Two anyway (although they would have shown it over Newsround probably)

Cheers, Asa

yeah, but my mum used to sit with me when Children's Television was on!
That's summed up my sad life though. I feel I've veered off subject!
5 NEWS update was quick, but very sparse. Anyone else see it? It was about 30secs long.

Also - I believe that CITV is all co-ordinated from Central TV (aka Carlton Central). It maybe that ITV Network decided that the content of an ITN newsflash on a murder trial was not suitable for children (but Newsround covered it pretty well) or it may be that the regional/network nature of ITV limited their news reactiveness.

Channel Five is a single network - like the BBC and Channel Four. ITV is still a federation of (albeit now only a few) networks - and interrupting all the ITV networks is far more complex than interrupting other schedules.

That said I would have thought CITV would have been easier to interrupt as it is common to all ITV companies.

Five News is far more frequent than ITV News though - it could be that ITN didn't have a presenter/production team for an ITV Newsflash?

Dunno...

Thw words News Flash are rarely used on TV channels now, i've been through why this is the case before and I can't be bothered explaining it again!

Channel 5 may well have been preparing for an update at the time just went directly into it, the scripts would have been prepared weeks in advance and it would just be a simple job of reading them.

To say Channel 4 does not care about news is frankly wrong.
C4 News is the best news bulletin on television, far better than anything found on the other networks.

ITV channels are not that difficult to interupt, they were already providing a network wide service in CITV, and there are plans to simply switch all ITV channels under the control of either LNN or ITV Network Centre or ITN.

The fact is ITN very very rarely interupt regular programming to break stories, they always wait until the programme is finished.
There are of course some exceptions to this rule.

What you have to remember is that Channel 5 would have probably been preparing for an update anyway, the BBC would have had this so expertly prepared because Jill was a BBC presenter.
And the fact is that they were showing childrens programming, although they did break into CITV to annouce the election date.
But the fact is it would bring up many questions for children if all of a sudden a news report came up talking about a murder trial and it may well have been reported to the ITC if they had done that.
It might have been better for BBC One to join BBC News 24, the BBC said that it would be the case that they would always join News 24 for news reports, yet they didn't on this occasion.

And does anyone know what actually happened on Sky One?
Typical really, I left the house at 5 mins past 4!! If only I had stayed those extra moments!!

I have never know Sky News to break into another Sky channel ever before, does this usually happen, or is it unprecedented. Did it actually happen today ?

It does occasionally happen, but of course Sky One used to have 'NewsBreak' but they have gone.
In the event of Diana's death Sky News was shown on every Sky channel.
I think this may become an ever more common event, especially considering they have designed special graphics for it.
This also gives us a very good idea of the new logo, it looks to be curved, I recon blue and white.

Channel 4 had a news report between the two quiz shows. It was presented by Kristian Guru-Murphy and was preceded by a channel 4 news report caption.

As I understand it in cases of Breaking News such as this, BBC One or Two would only join News 24 for a special programme (30mins plus). If a BBC One/Two News production team were available, and BBC One/Two Presentation only wanted a short bulletin, then the BBC One/Two team would cover with a short bulletin.

Engineering a clean opt-in and opt-out of News 24 for BBC One/Two for a short period in the middle of a major breaking story is unlikely to be clean, easy or desirable, and is likely to compromise the quality of output on both networks.

News 24 provide longer bulletins for Breaking News on BBC One/Two so that resources are not diluted by having to share between outlets.

Well the last few News Reports I have seen come from N6 with the national presenter. The last one I saw was with Anna Ford. The News 24 ones on BBC ONE are called BBC News Specials.

They managed perfectly well with the Concorde crash.
It is just a perfect example of how the BBC waste our money.
They already have one, and sometimes 2 channels running on breaking news but instead of linking them all up they spend 3 times as much and provide a service whereby they have to share everything. It would be very simple for a news organisation like the BBC to simply get News 24 to say 'we are now breaking off for a moment so that viewers on BBC One ccan join us' allowing a clean run into News 24.
Doing 3 different news reports is just pointless and wasteful.
