ITV would be a good prospect because they do have an excellent overseas sales reputation and lets not forget that ITV now part own SBS channels in The Netherlands (thanks to buying Talpa) and Top Gear is shown on their Veronica channel and as such most viewers wouldn't really notice any difference when this new series starts - except for the name but a good advertising campaign would help with that!

ITV did not buy Talpa, they bought Talpa Media, a subsidiary of Talpa. The stake in SBS channels is still owned by Talpa Holding, of which Talpa Media was a part.

Probably too many Talpas in one paragraph(!)

I didn't say ITV Studios couldn't make a show that would sell well internationally (and who knows - it may be that if ITV commissioned a Top Gear type show they may do so through an indie run by the Top Gear 4 anyway) - I was just questioning the 'stated as fact' that ITV have an excellent overseas sales reputation.

Reputation is the wrong word I'd say. I don't think any of us are qualified to say what ITV's sales reputation is like unless we've actually had any dealings with them. But in terms of having a setup that could instantly sell the show worldwide, they've certainly got that. ITV Studios Global Entertainment is a more than capable outfit and sell on behalf of many British indies in addition to ITV Studios productions. Of course, much of it is built on selling things in its archive like the high budget dramas (Poirot, Morse etc) and the ITC archive (Carry On, Thunderbirds...).

I don't think there's any doubt that the new show will be a co-production with an indie (probably one set up by Clarkson et al as you say).

The original poster suggested that ITV (which I think we were meant to take as ITV in the UK) have an excellent sales reputation - which suggested to me that UK ITV Studios in-house (rather than ITV commissions or ITV Studios-owned indies like So Television) productions made for the UK had reputation for selling well internationally, which I didn't take to be the case.

They are increasingly producing their own content to allow them to exploit international sales / distribution. Most noteably in drama. Mr Selfridge is a big seller and is in over 200+ territories, and things like Vera & Lewis sell well. They sell a lot of their one off's globally ie. Cilla, The Widower from last year. Home Fires was an ITV Studios production, and I think the forthcoming Jekyll & Hyde & Beowulf adaptations are also which clearly have one eye on international sales.

In terms of factual Come Dine With Me I expect is their biggest seller & probably Hells Kitchen which is long gone in the UK but still thriving I believe in the US.

If ITV do pick it up, the irony will be that for some markets BBC Worldwide will be the distributor.

These are just the same rumours going round in circles. No new information.

It really is the obvious choice though. A commercial-free global platform with deep pockets where they could pretty much pick up where they left off.

And, as has already been said on here, it's quite likely that Netflix would like the 'specials' format (i.e. the longer form films) rather than the regular studio format. That way, there is no problem with infringing on the BBC's format (as three blokes travelling through various countries on various challenges on various transport devices cannot in anyway be a patented idea), and would also fit Netflix's brief better.

I'd like to see more of the specials to be honest, or things like where they've got to drive from X to Y in an old banger. My favourite one was the one where they were given modern, fuel-efficient cars and had to try and run out before driving into Chernobyl.
