It really isn't the sort of show Netflix do though.

They're looking for fact ent proposals from UK indies. I'd say it would be an ideal commission for them.

And honestly, "House of Cars" has already been a twitter tending topic, it's an easy commission. In terms of rights, sure the branding, logo name, Stig are the BBC's but driving cars around and being idiots, not something you can claim copyright too really.

Original programming wasn't the sort of thing Netflix did just a couple of years back, but look where they are now. It's not something you can rule out.

As I've stated before, a significant element to Top Gear's popularity is the buzz around the live transmission. I really can't see it working as a VOD programme on a narrow platform. ITV on the other hand is a completely different proposition, sandwich it before X Factor, BGT or IACGMOOH results and it would seem to be a winner, depending when the BBC schedule the New Top Gear.

I suspect if it were to go Netflix it would be more of a 12 episode, monthly release format and more of the "films" Botswana etc with a monthly release and followup DVD/TX after initial run via Netflix.

If it's a choice between Netflix or Amazon Prime, I'd go for Netflix. It's more established than Amazon Prime which is trying to get people to subscribe by stealth by getting people to join their £79pa package for free one day delivery as well as the VoD service.

Considering they already show old Top Gear, there's already an audience for another male skewed motoring show with worldwide appeal.

It would be great if another linear channel hires the former trio, yet we can't stand by and write off the VoD services which are becoming mainstream and have the financial clout to hire the talent.

Let's not forget how Prime Instant Video will still make you pay for a fair few films and TV shows despite having paid £79 for the privilege to use the service... but that's another topic for another forum.

I suspect now the dust has died down and they are yesterdays news it'll be as successful as all the other BBC stars who've moved over to the commercial sector and basically remade their old show.

Big difference is that Andy Wilman is likely to be involved - they will come as a 4-piece, not a 3-piece, and by all accounts Jeremy Clarkson and Andy Wilman were very significant in the way Top Gear operated. This isn't a case of just the on-screen talent moving.

Amazon more likely to sell on second-run rights to a UK broadcaster though I'd have thought.

You don't even necessarily need the car element. I did see a suggestion that Clarkson and co could front a rebooted Wish you were Here type show based around the kind of road trips they did on Top Gear where the cars were very much in the periphery to the pratting around. I thought that was a pretty good shout.
