Might as well have a thread, seems news imminent .....

Jeremy Clarkson is expected to unveil a new motoring show to rival Top Gear in the next few weeks, with three broadcasters vying to sign up the presenter.

ITV and the US on-demand services Netflix and Amazon are understood to be the frontrunners to sign Clarkson, who was axed from the BBC2 show earlier this year after punching one of its producers.

Clarkson is set to be joined by both of his former Top Gear co-presenters, Richard Hammond and James May, with “three huge companies” competing to sign the stars. “They have had offers and they are close to making a decision about what they want to do,” an industry source said.

I suspect now the dust has died down and they are yesterdays news it'll be as successful as all the other BBC stars who've moved over to the commercial sector and basically remade their old show.

The difference this time though is that we are talking about the world's most widely watched show, which is probably a lot down to Clarkson, Hammond and May. Something tells me whatever form this new motoring show takes, it will be a success.

Knowing how much of a moneyspinner Top Gear with these three was for the BBC, I'm not surprised there's so much interest. Maybe we could see a revival of Pulling Power on ITV which those three could revamp just like they did with Top Gear.

Top Gear is one of the most watched shows in the world, but the new Clarkson front one wouldn't be if it ended up on something like Netflix. It is much watched because it's on TV and in many cases free to air TV.

It would be a big coup for Netflix certainly and they would pay the three a lot of money... but would it get that many viewers? Unless it's on traditional TV many parts of the world won't be able to see it

Even in the UK will people actually sign up to watch them? I loved Top Gear but not enough to invest in a new platform or pay for it

The problem they will have is that it must be significantly different to Top Gear. Otherwise they will face rights issues from the BBC, who paid Clarkson £8.4m in 2012 for his 30% share of 'Bedder 6' - the company operating the global rights.

BBC Worldwide now own the company outright, and I suspect they will defend their investment quite strongly.

There have been instances where Netflix Originals have been broadcast on network TV in areas not served by Netflix - for example in India, where House of Cards was shown on Zee Cafe.

There's nothing to stop Netflix producing the programme and selling it on to a network, either after an exclusive period, or even immediately. It'd be good advertising for the service. Amazon are doing similar with the new series of Ripper Street which will be shown on the BBC.

I expect an itv poaching announcement close to or soon after the final Clarkson-Hammond-May Top Gear on Sunday 28th June given that they've been seen with Peter Fincham of itv and no other broadcasters. Oh well. Another lot of BBC stars defecting to the other side.

Also worth noting that Netflix Originals are also sold on DVD in the UK, so there's an opportunity to watch these shows even if you don't have Netflix.

It really isn't the sort of show Netflix do though.
