That's only partially true. Cohen was out to get Clarkson. You've also got to appreciate that some at the BBC probably didn't want to be seen producing such a non-PC programme. I can't see Chris Evans telling someone who's used 80s BMW has traces of poo that it's "basically a Moroccan prison on wheels."
Clarkson led to the downfall of Clarkson - nobody else.
Please tell me that you don't believe that. Look at the bigger picture and anyone will see what transpired. The punch was only the trigger, what happened afterwards was completely Machiavellian in nature.

Evil PC Danny Cohen made him say all those racial slurs, break numerous final warnings and assault and verbally attack a producer for 20 minutes. How can you not see this? #justiceforClarkson
Anybody who complains about "PC" should try imagining the term "PC" to read "don't be an arsehole" instead. Then it may make sense.
OH GOD PC GONE MAD CAN'T EVEN REDUCE AN ENTIRE COUNTRY TO OFFENSIVE STEREOTYPES ANYMORE.
Very well said indeed.

There's being Bernard Manning or Roy Chubby Brown and then there's treading on eggshells. Let's not be too extreme.
Clarkson is of another era and like others have said, represents a Britain some people, me included, believe has been lost. If you don't like him, nobody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to watch him.

I don't think anybody suggested that was the case - the argument is simply that Clarkson brought his BBC demise on himself and it's hard to argue with that since's admitted previously he knew he was on his final warning.
I was and still am a fan of Clarkson but it's difficult to argue that some of his controversial actions and statements are okay because he is of "another era". There is a fine line between joking around and being offensive, I think he has often stepped over that line, almost always without meaning genuine offence or upset - we all know he likes to be a little over the top - but that doesn't make it acceptable behaviour.

Christ alive. Clarkson thumped a colleague. The colleague ended up in hospital as a result. If the person in question chose to push for charges, the charge would be ABH - which carries a custodial sentence of up to 5 years.
It is ridiculous to imply that Cohen somehow exploited a minor infraction.
This is all on top of the fact that Clarkson was on a final warning.
There is no conspiracy.

It's a difficult one. It's not a compliance issue; it's an HR issue.
What is has potentially done is screwed BBC Worldwide over. If I were an overseas broadcaster who had been buying in TG and now had a choice of the new Evans TG or the new Clarkson/Hammond/May show, I'd acquire the latter everytime.

Yes, I wonder if the Evans version will be as internationally sellable as the previous version has been. Also of course it sales to other broadcasters depends on if it's allowed out of the non-linear world
Of course the loss of Top Gear doesn't mean that the revenue from it suddenly totally dries up. Episodes are still being shown around the world and I'm sure will be for many years and the handful of local versions are still being licensed

BBC Worldwide is incidental to the UK productions of the BBC. It always has been.
On both occasions in the 80s when Doctor Who was cancelled, BBC Enterprises made more in sales to the various PBS stations than the entire Doctor Who production budget. It didn't make any difference to the outcome on either occasion; it couldn't.
Worth remembering BBC Worldwide now have channels in most they key markets around the world, so in those areas where Top Gear does air on a local channel even if it gets dropped they still have their own platform for the show, and if the UK show is as doomed as some people like to believe then that actually could be good news for them to actually sell the format to more countries around the world, rather than just the UK show.
