...would be unlikely to get a mention in the Daily Mail, even if he had had the same level of "credible" threat against him (about which I have no idea), and the same level of protection given to him.
And their response to the death threats against Oisin Tymon?

Agreed, it looks like a fake. Considering the BBC own the rights to Top Gear a new programme with a very similar name, and almost identical format would likely run into legal problems.
5th Gear was basically "Old Top Gear" with a new name on a new channel.
There was a good column by Fleetstreetfox in the Mirror when this all blew up, suggesting that Clarkson's next move might be a rebooted Wish You Were Here - the road trips are the best part of Top Gear
That's a pretty shoddy fake image. The number on the speedometer goes over Clarkson but behind May, for one thing.

Who?
Wait, I thought the death threats were against the Director General of the BBC?

So, just thinking aloud here, about keeping Top Gear in it's guise of the past 22 series.
BBC retain copyright over the name and I'm guessing the easily marketable elements of the show..so..
BBC Worldwide commission and fund the budget for a newer smaller series of 6x60 (which can be easily reversioned to 50,45,40 & 30 min versions for overseas broadcast)
An independent production company then makes the programme - this shouldn't be too difficult as 2/3rds of the current presenting team own their own production companies in the form of Blockhead & May, and Hampsters Wheel productions.
The presenters are then rehired on a freelance basis, so no tricky contracts to hurdle over, and then BBC Worldwide recoup the cost, by selling it overseas, and, BBC Two would buy the series off BBC Worldwide for UK broadcast and treat it as a normal programming acquisition.
Obviously, it appears Clarkson wants out of the BBC anyway, but could idea have been one way out to keep the trio and the programme on the BBC?

It would be a non-starter and although it might please the million or so who seem to believe violence is perfectly acceptable in the workplace, it's not going to make the BBC look good at all to the wider general public.
I get what you're saying and perhaps it could continue to be produced with Clarkson and co. for an international version, but that would make the tough job of replacing the presenter(s) even tougher from the get so. There is no reason why if given the chance a new trio shouldn't work - might not be the first trio they attempt but they'll get there in the end.

People employed on a freelance basis still have a contract (even if it's verbal), otherwise they wouldn't turn up when you want them, or get paid. When those people want a lot of money for specialist work, those contracts will be written by lawyers and involve lots of negotiation - i.e. the exact position Clarkson / Hammond / May were already in with the BBC.
