Of course they could, the international sales would fund the show.

The trio could easily go to a new channel with a new name. I can imagine the trailers now - "New home, new name - same show."

Would you as a potential buyer of the show, take the risk of paying up front for a product that's undergone a 'change of regime' ? Equally, would a commercial channel fork out (or be able to borrow) the cash, on something that may not be a 'dead cert'

Also, name me one programme, format, or performer that has 'gained' (or even maintained stature) by moving from the Beeb to a commercial channel ?

I'll give you two, Ant and Dec.

Yes, fair point Cool though (I think) they were actors in a BBC children's drama series, whereas their ITV work
was always as hosts of 'Live LE based' shows ?

The failure rule can work the other way too, Davina McCall anybody ?

Philip Schofield.

Well, again childrens TV to adult TV, but OK, I can hear the Monty Python 'What have the Romans ever given us ? ' sketch forming in my head, you win.....

For every Bruce Forsyth and Morecambe and Wise there's a Cilla Black and Ant & Dec.

Stanley Baxter. And even Brucie was massively popular on ITV after his initial debacle. Ok, I'll quit while I'm ahead!!

Although Brucie was successful initially on ITV with Sunday Night at the Palladium. I regard him as
someone who's flourished with both organisations. Yes, Stanley Baxter's best output was with LWT, rather like Kenny Everett who moved from Thames to the BBC (and Capital to Radio 2) the ITV (and Capital) stuff was far superior.

Returning to Top Gear I see the BBC News article currently says...
Quote:
May gave no comment, but updated his Twitter profile to say: "Former TV presenter".

...Despite the fact that James May's profile said was saying that this morning before it was announced, and had been tweeting about being unemployed for at least a week.

I think the decision to drop him was the only one the BBC realistically had, and opting not to renew his contract was the easiest way to do so. It'll be interesting to see if he still guest hosts HIGNFY in a few weeks time, as the subject would inevitably be brought up.

Stanley Baxter stuff started on BBC Scotland, and that where alot of his stuff come from. To be fair Once he left LWT he only was allowed to do two shows, and neither have been repeated.

Arghhhh !!!!, Don't let the facts get in the way of a good story, he said on his radio show this morning he
wasn't interested, and reiterated that outside the R2 studios to the press.

Although when asked today, before the announcement, he did say he didn't know if the post was available yet.

EDIT: Missed the start of the interview when he said he wasn't interested in the job

I can only guess it's one of those cook-n'chat-a-thon progs that fills airtime on a Sunday morning ?
