How long did the Jonathan Ross situation take to resolve. It just feels like this should have been done and dusted by now.

I think Wossy was suspended for months, but that was clearcut for obvious reasons wasn't it.

It's barely been a week. The wheels of internal investigation are very slow to turn. They'll have to invite to interview all those directly involved in the 'fracas', and speak to any witnesses. All parties may not be immediately available. Based on the responses they may need to reinterview those directly involved.

That's before the report is even drafted, and then a decision reached. Clarkson is already on his second warning, so they'll have to decide his future in that context as well. There is due process and it has to be followed, it can't be rushed.

And that's the problem with the BBC (not exclusive to the BBC granted!). The main issue though the suspension of the whole show due to the actions of one person. If they feel they need to do that it should be because the issue can be resolved in days rather than weeks or months.

Thursdays Private Eye will allege (as many have suspected) that the real culprit behind all the fuss and bother is Danny Cohen Director of Television. He's never been a Clarkson fan and (again according to the Eye) it was a Cohen minion who briefed the Mail with the 'Clarkson compared to Saville' story.

Given Cohen's record I may well be that whether Clarkson goes or not Cohen must. You cant have senior BBC directors briefing against the DG & The Corporation. As the old saying goes 'no-one is bigger that the BBC, not even someone with a bigger ego than Clarkson.

The precedent I guess being a certain Jonathan Ross, who was suspended from all BBC work in the aftermath of the Sachs affair despite the incident in question taking place on a show where he was merely a guest.

This is much more serious issue in that it's an HR issue rather than merely a broadcasting compliance issue.

I'd say the latter is more serious than the former.

However, they are separate issues altogether. Ross was banned from appearing on air because it was a compliance issue. In the case of Clarkson, he should just be suspended from the production rather than the channel as a whole.

Also liked their choice of covers for this issue.

I'm hoping this goes no further than a suspension of Clarkson, but I'm unsure how that would work if the current series is effectively cut short. If he was suspended when the programme isn't on the suspension would be fairly redundant.

I can't see him getting sacked completely, but then he might do a Jonathan Ross and take the opportunity to call it a day at the BBC (and hopefully take May and Hammond with him).

It's a real shame all this. Top Gear's been consistently one of the best programmes the BBC has outputted in years, and I just can't see it working without all three of them.

Apparently the show was only suspended because May and Hammond refused to do it without Clarkson. If this is true, Top Gear is probably going to have a completely new presenting lineup next series if Clarkson leaves.

A bit of light relief - 31,000+ people have signed a petition asking for Alan Partridge to be Clarkson's replacement:

Then it needs to be re invented again, and the format changed. The
contrived sketches and mucking around should go.
I can sort of imagine a supercar and rally style show. Chris Evans name
has been mentioned recently, he'd be quite good I think ? They
could include F1 stuff, but I suspect using any footage from Uncle Bernie
would be a no-no. Plenty of other non F1 stuff though, Le Mans is something
that all the UK broadcasters totally ignore at present for instance.
