Whilst I believe that programmes like Beadle's About were cruel television, Mr Beadle also raised an awful lot of money for charity. And it's always sad to hear of the ending of a human life.

I'm sure most people will know him best for Beadle's About , but for whatever reason, I long associated him with You've Been Framed first and foremost - that show felt like it was truly his, probably even long after he'd left it!

A fine entertainer in his day who probably deserves at least a bit of praise in general for his charity work.

I'm not saying their opinions aren't welcome. There's nothing wrong with criticising him or his work if you wish. I just feel there are better ways of putting your views across than saying "may his arseholiness and withered left hand burn in the hell " and "when Noel Edmonds pops his clogs i'll be having a houseparty" [yes, I'm aware of the gag] etc.

There will never be another Jeremy Beadle, just like there will never be another Eric Morecambe.

With respect, they are hardly comparable.

So what's it to be, folks? Are threads like these only for members to show praise?

I was no fan of Beadle, but I might have stopped short of dancing a jig as others feel like doing.

However, I can't say I approve of the arbitrary editing of members posts and an enforced reverence to the recently passed. I think a certain amount of freedom should be enjoyed by those who post here regularly. Their opinions are apparently valid on other subject matters, so why the squeamishness from the admin now?

Nazi Germany? No.

Thin end of the wedge? Umm, maybe?

Gavin, with all due respect, we are talking about a person dying. Whether you like someone or hate them it is just common courtesy and decency to show respect upon their death, if for nothing else than to remember the sanctity and fragility of life. We're hardly talking about idents here, are we? The freedom of speech comes in where you can state whether you liked or disliked the man. However, some of the distasteful and downright offensive remarks made here tonight have gone too far. As the moderating team has always said over the years, with free speech comes responsibility.

I was sorry to hear about Jeremy Beadle's death. Like many here I grew up with his shows and fondly remember having a good old laugh.

I know some of those comments are difficult to read - I felt the same way, in truth.

My point is there are equally cruel things said about presenters and newsreaders - some of whom read along. I have consistently criticised that type of needless comment (much of it highly inappropriate) and it has largely fallen on deaf ears.

I just found a disparity in the handling of this thread when the recipient is unlikely to feel the burn of hateful comments, where Natasha Kaplinski is expected to take it with a smile on her face.

That is all.

What is it about both the BBC and ITN being unable to get broadcast quality clips of Beadles About and Game For A Laugh? Everything I've seen tonight (barring him on that oddball rotating set on YBF!) looked like it came off YouTube.

ITV.com is more ridiculous, as tribure clips from Beadle's About look like they've stuck a tape into a video player and filmed the TV screen. And i'm sure I can here people talking in the background...

Does anybody know when this news broke? It looks as if it was around 8pm but the Tiscali homepage broke the news at 7:35... Confused

There was an announcement on The One Show, by Adrian Chiles, at 7.05pm.

Just watched the show again and Adrian Chiles nearly got me going when he announced Jeremy's death and then says "Let's... let's celebrate...". Thankfully, he continuted by saying "another great career in entertainment" referring to Lulu. The BBC has concerned me today... Rolling Eyes

I don't think it's very nice to start dancing on his (presently metaphorical) grave Mad There are many famous people I can't stand. If Madonna fell off the face of the earth tomorrow, I'd privately jump with joy. However, I wouldn't go out of my way to troll all over a condolence / nostalgia / memories thread saying what an absolute waste of good oxygen she was Rolling Eyes It really is terribly bad form, there's no excuse for it.

I agree Chie, its disgusting how callous people can be just to be "different". Rolling Eyes

This is terribly sad news, having grown up watching Beadle's About and You've Been Framed, another stalwart of light entertainment has died. Ok, he may not have been described as a legend but he was certainly, to me, the master of the TV prank on British television for over the last 25 years. He was indeed the ITV equivilent of Noel Edmonds and the 'Gotcha' on BBC1 - the difference being it was all about the public.

Yes he may not have been on TV (certainly on Saturday nights anyway) since Ant and Dec did the Banged up with Beadle feature on Saturday Night Takeaway but he was still an active charity campaigner and writer.

"Remember next time the star of the show could be you."

Goodbye Jeremy.

Well I personally think Beadle deserves a big hand for all the work he has done.

Jeremy was a close family friend and its very upsetting reading the comments posted on here about him.

He was an excellent presenter, writer and all-round entertainer.

The most memorable thing for me was at a friends wedding up in Hertfordshire; when the vicar asked if there was anybody who knew of any reason that they couldn't get married he popped his hand up and shouted "Me! Sam, don't do it! Have me instead" which bought the whole church into fits of laughter. Even the vicar laughed.

He leaves behind a very loving wife and two beautiful children.

I hope that ITV do say something at the beginning of Saturday's You've Been Framed as that was one of his more well-known shows of the 90s together with Beadle's About.

Please stop all the nasty comments about him, if you knew him, you'd like him. I can't think of a single reason why nobody wouldn't like him.

A good quote I heard today was from Paul O'Grady who said: "The era of the television prank is now officially dead". Well said.

RIP, mate, can see you and that white van up in Heaven trying to wind St Peter up!

UPDATED: My father has spoken to his family earlier, and comments on another website (won't mention which) have apparently upset members of his family.
