The Agenda beats Newsnight most weeks, it really punches above its weight.

Hmm - but it's on ITV not C4. ITV should be out-rating BBC One, not BBC Two... C4 is the main rival for BBC Two and Newsnight, not ITV.

It would surely be a surprise if BBC Two beat ITV wouldn't it?

Because ITV isn't famed for its current affairs output. If BBC Two put on an entertainment show that beat whatever was on ITV at the same time it would be quite notable, as often happened when Bake Off was still there.

I'm not sure why this is a contentious point - ITV is putting out a political discussion show in a slot that has mostly been entertainment in the past and beating an established brand of 34 years standing in the process. Isn't that a good thing? Or would we rather it got trounced and was replaced by a repeat of Through The Keyhole?

ITV bothering with any new content in the post-news slot is good news and it's good that for now at least they're sticking with this. They seem to regard Tom Bradby quite highly too.

Back on topic and wonder what will replace Tonight if it's going to run for fewer episodes as from next season they won't have the Europa League taking the slot. Wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of consumer show (possibly made by Shiver) launched to tackle some of the things currently covered by Tonight.

I'm not sure I agree with this. Surely in terms of the demo that you're aiming to reach, at that time of night, it's not a straight forward BBC1 v ITV, BBC2 v C4, as it perhaps is during prime time?

I'm sure there is more prestige in having a current affairs show that beats the long established Newsnight than one that beats a repeat of A Question of Sport or Live at the Apollo.

Only it doesn't beat Newsnight. The Agendas ratings are inflated by STV and UTVs regional opt out.

The comparison is utterly ridiculous its like comparing c4 news to The One Show in terms of content and ratings. Unless you think Russell Kane and Mariella Frostrup after dinner conversation is actual news.

Looks like Tonight will be replaced by "The Kyle Files" in January, in which "Jeremy Kyle confronts current issues of the day."
