Last night at the Brits (broadcasted live on ITV) rapper Kanye West took to the stage to perform his new song. However producers made the decision to mute much of the performance due to explicit language as it was just after the UK watershed. Ofcom stated that they received over 100 complaints of the rappers use of offensive language. Though many fans of the rapper took to twitter to share there 'upset' of the muting. ITV didn't do the best job even with a 20sec delay as the n word was heard twice during the performance on ITV.

In my opinion I think that it was appropriate to 'mute' his performance as it was just after the watershed. However , instead of muting it they might as well of asked him not to use the language or just not broadcast his performance at all (maybe just for the audience at the 02 during ITV's adverts ???)

Im lead to believe he was asked to clean it up.

He did not use offensive language, it might have been better. HE did use a single highly offensive word...... N word. He was muted 15 times and it was all for that one word.

"just after" the watershed is still after the watershed, whether it be 1 minute past or 29 minutes. We shouldn't be pandering to mollycoddled idiots who, come 9pm, require 15 minutes to get out of the way or risk being offended by..well...life.

No

Can TV channels show whatever they like after 9pm?
No. The transition to more adult material must not be unduly abrupt and the strongest material should appear later in the evening. But even then Ofcom’s rules protect viewers from offensive and harmful content.

I thought the situation was an absolute joke personally. If they are going to mute most of the song, what is the point? In my opinion it was past the watershed so should have been played in full unless it's someone cutting someone else's head off or something...

Poor booking for the event.

Personally I think they could have done without the performance altogether. There were slightly too many American performers for my liking anyway, considering it was the BRITS.

If they had to run with his performance, ITV should have taken an ad break. They could have shown the performance later on ITV2, properly edited.

Didn't they cut off Adele once as she was about to perform?

Didn't they cut off Adele once as she was about to perform?

They cut away from her award speech to go to Blur. James Corden had to interrupt her.

If you're going to make the decision to censor swear words, you don't book an artist known for swearing to perform a song full of swear words.

To be fair it was after the watershed and effectively that condones swear words therefore his performance shouldn't have been muted. What we have to remember is that the Brits feature artist and music videos famous for explicitly too so I can't really see anyone who is watching being all that offended by swear words.

That said if you were a fan of Kanye I can't imagine you'd have actually enjoyed the performance because it was interrupted so in that sense I sympathise with fans. Like mentioned, it would have made sense to either only show his performance to those in the O2 or record it for itv2.

Although I would actually give Kanye any airtime regardless, I think he a horrific artist but that's just personal preference.

It was just after the watershed though in a show likely to have a larger than usual young audience. An hour later they might have aired it uncensored but I think the issue was more the specific word used rather than swearing in general.

Agree it was just a bad booking and I doubt ITV had much say over that one.
