ITV plans new 'Crimewatch'-style show
Thursday, November 16 2006, 15:35 UTC - by Dave West

ITV1 producers are hoping to launch a new show along the lines of the BBC's Crimewatch UK.

The programme, titled Manhunt, will try to capture 10 of the country's most wanted criminals. It will be fronted by newsreader Mark Austin and GMTV host Sarah Heaney.

Developers, working with the Crimestoppers charity, want Manhunt to be a presented-live mixture of reconstructions, CCTV footage and anti-crime advice.

A 90-minute pilot is due to be screened in early December, according to The Sun, with a series possibly following next year.

“The cases have been selected as some of the UK’s hardest to find individuals who have so far evaded arrest," commented an ITV spokeswoman. "Police have warned that in some instances they could be a serious danger to the public and all need to be caught.”

Hasn't this already been done by ITV during the early 1990's an early version of Manhunt (Britain's Most Wanted springs to my mind here) and also who remember's LWT local then national programme Crime Monthly.

Not new but could be a help to their soap-filled schedules! Although I'd love to see the return of both Crime Monthly and Britain's Most Wanted as monthly shows in a Tuesday 9pm/11pm slot! (dependant upon Live Champions League) - along with First Tuesday and one-off documentaries!

A few years ago they were doing things like this regularly, hosted mainly by Dermot Murnaghan with Kirsty Young and Mary Nightingale amongst his co-hosts I think!

Britain's Most Wanted was hosted by Dermot Murgnaham and Penny Smith, I don't how long it ran for, but I have a trailer on VHS for it from 1998 and it was usually shown Fridays at 9pm, it had a great theme tune to it, for some reason I preferred that to Crimewatch. Though Manhut sounds like a clone of BMW, but different than Crimewatch which is welcome.

Was just to say about this show, it was on Granada too. I know Granada did CrimeFile with So but that was dropped when the ITV style news came in.

Anglia also had a crime show in the late 90s - it came from the Anglia West studio - which having a virtual set could be used for very different shows quite easily. (This is all from memory so may be wrong)

ISTR that ex-Look East presenter Jayne Evans was the producer, and occasionally presented. (I think Jayne is now back with BBC East again)

I do mean Jenni Falconer Embarassed she's got more gorgeous through the years!

Wasn't CrimeFile extended into a 30 minute programme shown on Tuesday's once a month and presented by So Rahman. Such a loss, he was to Granada. A very popular local presenter!

Btw I put YTV in brackets to advise that it was made by Yorkshire Tv for the whole ITV network.

Yep I've got a video that I downloaded from a site years ago of a 9.25 opening which started with a Yorkshire produced trailer from "Crimefile, Tuesday at 7.30, on Granada!" followed by an ident with Kerrie welcoming us to "our programmes for Monday as we start with Trisha"
