It is in a mess indeed.
Hopefully though when Jim Hytner's replacement comes on board she will work with the design team and bring everything in line with one another.

But why? Why does it matter that the corporate logo is one way when the ones that appear on air look another way? As long as the 1, 2 & 3 logos are recognised and work as branding by themselves does it matter if they don't look slightly diffrent to each other?

compared with what's gone in the past ITV is the most coherant it's ever been in terms of branding

I don't think the integration of all the separate domains into itv.com has gone too badly, to be honest.

Consider that only 4 years ago, there was itv.co.uk operating as a glorified links page, whilst regional stations had their own websites (with no uniformity for naming them - i.e. Anglia was angliatv.com, Westcountry was carlton.com/westcountry, Tyne Tees was and remains tynetees.tv), programmes had their own websites which may or may not have had an itv prefix in the URL, news was accessed from itn.co.uk, weather from another separate website again.

Although I don't think the content of itv.com is particularly stellar, and I particularly don't like the way the regional websites are paid lip service too, but the simpler itv.com/... format for everything works well and I don't think has been badly integrated at all.

The problem isn't just with integration - the site itself is worse than it was when it first launched, the whole thing has slowed down, probably to do with the overuse of blue colour everywhere. It's badly designed, and it's worrying when a regional broadcaster's site can come up with a better design and layout than the controlling company!

The regions websites are also worse, V1 of the generic websites (see dream factory link on Meridian's website) worked much better, and looked better. I don't know who or which company is in charge of running these sites, but they need a good kick up the arse...

Well the coding is full of tables and tons of images as well and tons of javascript as well, so it's been badly coded, give me the job i'll sort it out! Wink

Indeed, I think the site stinks. But the original poster inferred that having all the various itv.com/... URLs was 'a mess'. I was merely highlighting how much of a mess it was before. And to elaborate on that a bit, turning the clock back 4 years a typical junction on Westcountry in 2001 could easily go like this:

ITV News summary ends, plugging www.itn.co.uk
ITV National weather runs, plugging www.itv-weather.co.uk
trailer plays out, plugging www.itv.co.uk
2nd trailer about a preview for that years F1 season plays out, plugging www.itv-f1.com
third trailer about the upcoming Crossroads revival plays out, plugging www.crossroadshotel.co.uk
Ident into next programme runs, plugging www.carlton.com/tv

THAT is a mess. 12 months on from that however, all of those promos would have used an itv.com/... url, which has got to be acknowledged as a better way, and less of a marketing disaster than to use different URLs (with .com and .co.uk being mixed in) which many people would not remember.

even more bizarrely someone has registered this web address

www.itvsuperstore.com

why not use www.itv.com/superstore
or even www.itv.com/shop

there is nothing super about the store!

the itv teletext font does not do the channel any favours. It's just another i t v disater to add to the list.

I think that's more to do with the technical limitations of teletext (small t) than with ITV branding.

There should be a uniformed logo for all broadcast services and a similar one for ITV PLC.

eg. itv1,2,3,sport,itv.com,movies,drama, etc. should have the same logo.

I thought they DID have the same logo?

The logo is the ITV Lettering, the channels have 4 squares in their logos, the main logo is the scratch one, with addon bits for Sport, .com, etc, and finally the PLC logo in a blue box, with a blue outline.

If they all used the same logo formatting, it would be boring, like the BBC Logos.

You can tell they are all part of itv, so in that way, it is successful.

Technically yes as they all use Arial Alternative, but then no with the fact that they're all different colours, some are joined, some aren't, some are flat, some are bevelled with a scratch, some use the box/boxes around the I, T & V and other's don't.

I do quite like the brand it's just the fact that nothing seems together, or more the case of things need to catch up.

My main criticism is the way in which on screen logos are now using the 3 boxes, yet corporate are still using the joined up rectangle.

They should just go for the split logo, and use the squares. They could even go the way the BBC have gone and use the itvi design of having a black or white ITV logo with a different coloured forth box to represent the channel.

They should definately update the website with the split logo.
The only problem with using the split logo is that the rectangle can't be added beneath, things would have to go the way that ITV News has gone.

Though who knows this time next year there may be a whole new logo for the corportation and on screen, there may even be new owners!

i say go back to the itv branding of the late 80's wherte some regions took on the itv border, itv grampian and itv central logos etc, quite like the jingle for it too quite professional! i.e. the first attempt at standard branding of itv of course it failed i know som regions did not use it, granada as an example i think
