No as far as I am aware originally ITV wasn't regional (could be very wrong). We still have a big old TV ariel that points in the direction of the main London transmitter from the times before our relatively local Sandy Heath transmitter was installed.

It was planned to be regional from the start, although for the first 6 months there was only one 'region'

ITV started in the London area in 1955 - (Redifusion on weekdays and ATV at the weekends).

The Midlands (ATV/ABC - weekdays/weekends) region opened next in 1956 and then the North (Granada/ABC - weekdays/weekends) - what is now Granada and Yorkshire - a few months later

How do you know we won't get regions back? We PROBABLY won't but we might if Ofcom get fierce or Mr.Allen leaves!

Do you really think that if any one else was in charge, everything would be totally diffrent?

Would another Chief Exec take a look round at the studios lying empty and the wasteful duplication of functions around the country and think: 'we'll keep these just for old times sake'?

I agree that Charles Allen will dilute this anniversary of ITV.

It wasn't duplications of functions, Inspector, it was similar functions doing different things.

Shall we sack all cleaning staff around the country except for one, and get that one person with their one mop to take turns cleaning every building in the country?

The problem is that ITV have been trying as hard as they can to centre production on one centre - meaning suitable facilities, such as Central, Anglia and Tyne Tees studios are now closing or closed. Tyne Tees has one of the biggest studios in the country, but it is never used.
