My point I'm trying to make is that we do actually pay for the BBC(unlike ITV)

You do pay for ITV indirectly, unless of course you never buy anything that's advertised on the channel.

Of course, indirectly, we pay for EVERYTHING ever advertised on tv, on radio and in newspapers. We are paying them to sell us a product or service! Very rarely do I see an advert and think, 'i'll go out and buy that.' - it just never happens that way anymore. If I see an advert for a tv in Dixons i'll immediately log on and search the web for the same model at a much better price. Same with music adverts and even movies. Adverts just don't work anymore. The only ones that actually work are where you have to ring a phone number at say £1.50 a call or per minute. So the only ones that can be sure to work are things like Crazy Frog ringtone. Also the huge onslaught of DFS sales adverts will work due to repetition. I suppose if I had to buy a new sofa I would consider DFS - but I can't think of any product currently advertised that I would consider purchasing.

But the point is that the advertising cost percentages are so small in comparison to what the BBC are guaranteed each year which makes each channels funding totally different. ITV need to produce great programmes to encourage the advertiser but they don't seem to be producing anything that great anymore to entice and increase advertising revenues.

I think the constantly changing plans for ITV4 stress the point that at this current time, ITV does not need to launch ITV4.

ITV1 does have a pretty strong schedule - far superior to BBC1, though it does have it's problems - which have been discussed here at length.

ITV2 performs well, while ITV3 has quickly estabhlished itself. However, before ITV4 is even considered they need to iron out the relationship between ITV2 and ITV3 and the main ITV Network - for example some shows such as Millionaire, Corrie and Emmerdale now fit better into ITV3's remit than ITV2's.

Both the channels daytime line ups need to be re-evaluated. Airing programmes twice a day is acceptable, but the ITV3 schedule is ridiculous. ITV3 also need to delve deeper into the ITV archives.

I don't think there is any real demand for a CITV channel at this time - but they should resurrect the CITV2 slot on ITV2 - at least an hour from 5pm and something at the weekends.

I also think both ITV2 and ITV3 should consider giving national airings to some (certainly not all!) regional programmes.

Agree about everything there.

ITV1 just need to stop commissioning rubbish ideas involving celebrities, and if they are going to, make them good.

Look out for the short series of Celebrity Detox's on Channel 4 next week, a reality show (in some form), with celebrities, yet most probably shot as a documentary and will most probably be a good programme to watch.

I'd also like to stop them moving programmes and cutting series short, and if they aren't proud of comedies, could they please move them onto ITV2 rather than getting rid of them totally or moving them somewhere different.

If you take away Corrie, Emmerdale & Millionaire from ITV2, you get Judge Judy and Third Rock From the Sun.
Though I do agree with you, they should move to ITV3, which would improve their daytime schedule and they're starting to dig into the archives a little with programmes like Second Thoughts entering the schedules.

It would be nice to see ITV2 commissioning a few cheap shows, whether it be documentaries, dramas or comedies. Or even buying programmes from the US or Australia.
They could try and revitalise the daytime schedules with less american chat.

And a CiTV2 slot wouldn't go amiss.

I think at this stage it is possibly more about ITV wanting the ITV brand extended to the one channel they fully own, but isn't branded ITV...

Why does ITV need another channel, when they've barely got anything worth watching on their exisiting 3 channels. Plus they've got ITV News, which is just a joke...but I'm not laughing.

I was thinking about ITV4, as most of the audience in the day is made up of females, would they split it so that the daytime covers daytime programmes and spin offs to compliment the ITV1 schedule.

Then afternoon and evening could focus on men, with sports, action dramas, motors, and programmes aimed at a male audience.

Though of course it wouldn't be referred to as Male & Female so that audiences aren't repelled from the channel.

I suppose that they could then run programmes like the World Rally and Formula 1 highlights on there, maybe regional car programmes like Pulling Power and even post match extra evaluation or a phone in.
