OH
You do pay for ITV indirectly, unless of course you never buy anything that's advertised on the channel.
Of course, indirectly, we pay for EVERYTHING ever advertised on tv, on radio and in newspapers. We are paying them to sell us a product or service! Very rarely do I see an advert and think, 'i'll go out and buy that.' - it just never happens that way anymore. If I see an advert for a tv in Dixons i'll immediately log on and search the web for the same model at a much better price. Same with music adverts and even movies. Adverts just don't work anymore. The only ones that actually work are where you have to ring a phone number at say £1.50 a call or per minute. So the only ones that can be sure to work are things like Crazy Frog ringtone. Also the huge onslaught of DFS sales adverts will work due to repetition. I suppose if I had to buy a new sofa I would consider DFS - but I can't think of any product currently advertised that I would consider purchasing.
But the point is that the advertising cost percentages are so small in comparison to what the BBC are guaranteed each year which makes each channels funding totally different. ITV need to produce great programmes to encourage the advertiser but they don't seem to be producing anything that great anymore to entice and increase advertising revenues.
