They're not saying they're in high definition though are they. I'd say be careful what you wish for - you might end up with a huge disclaimer on screen telling you Corrie wasn't filmed in HD, the characters are all fictional and the whole show isn't actually real life!

But at the end of a promo the announcer now always says "on ITV1 and ITV1 HD" even when the programme isn't actually in HD

From what I've seen, there are no end announcers on ITV1 HD. So saying it on ITV1 isn't claiming the viewers are watching a HD show.

What more do people want? A constant caption throughout saying "this is not HD programming"? It gives a better picture, I'm sure most viewers don't care.

No they don't, but it devalues genuine HD, if the GBP think they're watching it when they're not.

It's the same as upscaling DVD players, loads of people think they're now getting HD from DVDs.

I do acknowledge that ITV 1 on the 'HD' channel looks a whole lot better than the sub optimal bit rate staved sludge on Ch 103, a shame I can't programme my Freesat box to swap the EPG positions, but that would be far too useful.

ITV announcers do say 'On ITV1 and in high definition on ITV1 HD' for those programmes and films that are in native HD, otherwise it's 'On ITV1 and on ITV1 HD'.

I hope the constant "...on ITV1 and ITV1 HD" at the end of every trailer isn't a permanent feature, as it's become tiresome already.

If you run a simulcast, then of course everything is going to be on both channels. I don't need reminding of it! Stating the bleedin' obvious at every opportunity is just going to annoy people.

They might be doing it as the channel is new and want to let as many people as possible know they now have an ITV1 HD. Could be wrong though.

Very true. I read on one forum some bod saying his DVD upscales to 1080p, which makes them better picture quality than Sky movies HD because that only broadcasts in 1080i.

Why not just remove the HD bit of the ITV1 HD dog when showing SD upsampled content (like Sky 1 HD does, as do the Sky Sports HD channels) or remove the DOG altogether (like C4 HD does)?

Slapping an ITV1 HD dog over SD upscaled programming is a bit misleading - though given how much better SD looks on ITV1 HD than it does on ITV1 SD viewers could be forgiven for thinking everything on ITV1 HD is HD in comparison...

It's no more misleading than Sci Fi HD showing seventies Dr Who episodes this weekend or Sky 1 HD showing all their non HD programmes on the channel with the same HD logo in the corner.

Sky1 HD remove the 'HD' part of their logo when airing SD content so therefore it's not really misleading anyone.

Except that Sky1 don't do that. They remove the HD element of the Sky1HD logo when showing SD upscaled content. Like Sky's HD Sport channels, they only add the HD logo to their DOGs when showing HD content.

Fair point hadn't noticed with Sky 1 but definitely Sci Fi do it as do ESPN, SKY Real Lives HD and Disney Cinemagic HD - all with HD Dogs this afternoon but showing non HD material.
