I'm amazed ITV went to the effort at all considering they could have got away with using exactly the same as the SD channel.

Not only that but, unlike C4 HD, they are misleading people into thinking they're watching HD content, when they're not.

No they haven't, if its a HD show, the announcer says "now on ITV1 and ITV1 HD, its ____" whereas when it isn't a HD show, the announcer simply says "now on ITV1, its ___".

Yes, but an announcer isn't talking all the way through an hour programme.

But at the end of a promo the announcer now always says "on ITV1 and ITV1 HD" even when the programme isn't actually in HD

Why is it misleading, because they've knocked up a few idents and a dog with HD on it ?

But then that's similar to the likes of ESPN, Living, Discovery, Eurosport HD & Sky 1 amongst others, none of whom show all true native HD content.

Broadcasters have opted to showcase their native HD content by offering a simulcast of existing services. There is still very little content in true HD, so for the rest of the time, viewers get upscaled SD.

There is still a noticeable difference in picture quality between the SD and 'HD' services and so regardless of the semantics of using the HD term, viewers are receiving an enhanced service, and for some programmes true HD. How else are broadcasters able to brand these services ?

I think it's only the BBC that are providing a scheduled HD service (with the addition of simulcasts of other BBC output), with all true native HD (Sky Movie channels excepted). Of the simulcasters, it's probably Sky 1 that has the most native HD content.

Was Frost in high def last night? I'm in STV Land so couldn't record ITV1 HD which is really a major annoyance.

Yes, to be blunt. They should follow C4's example and if they MUST have a DOG, only display it during native HD broadcasts

Then they're just as misleading then

As higher quality services with an occasional genuine HD broadcast. There's enough confusion with the punters and the 'HD Ready' product branding, without the broadcasters adding to it.

Makes you wonder why they've put so much effort into that channel really.

I'd be expecting the election debate and the World Cup to be on it though?

Yet Channel 4 have named their service 'Channel 4 HD' and it appears on the EPG as such. Is that ok then, as long as there is no DOG or ident ?

It's less than ideal, but at least it's not as misleading.

I haven't seen ESPN HD or Living HD, but Discovery HD only shows native HD programmes, Eurosport HD has an additional DOG saying ´native HD´ when it is and Sky1HD only have a Sky1 DOG when not showing true HD.

ITV are confusing viewers. They're promoting SD shows as being on ITV and ITV HD.
