And in all honesty most channels now have the appropriate marquee of channels - ITV1+1 is arguably offering viewers a much more valuable service than "ITV5" would.

(Devil's advocate) -- So well known marquee brands like Discovery, National Geographic, Disney, Channel 4, Hallmark/Universal etc. are devalued by a timeshift?

Satellite and cable channels were already cheap - hundreds of them filled with 'take it or leave it' imports and repeats. There was nothing there to devalue.

It's like DOGs - DOGs are what dime-a-dozen repeat channels like Dave have. You wouldn't put a DOG on ITV1, the channel is better than that.

Well UTV have a DOG/watermark - and I rate them higher than ITV1!

There are many signs that says that assumption is true.

The viewing share of Channel 4 +1 is close to that of ITV4. If we assume ITV1 +1 gets more viewers than Channel 4 +1, you may bet that ITV1 +1 will outperform ITV4 within a year, and it will absolutely outperform whatever "ITV5" would have been.

What a pointless waste of time wanting ITV1+1. When I was a kid you didn't have Westward + 1, Southern + 1, HTV + 1, ATV + 1, Grampian + 1 etc, so why bother having ITV1 + 1 now? If Coronation Street happens to be on ITV1 at the same time as EastEnders on BBC1, then tough luck, get a video recorder of some sort (DVD/HDD recorder, Freeview+, Sky+ etc) and record Coronation Street so you can watch it after EastEnders.

What an absurd comment to make. You do come out with some crap sometimes.

I didn't have a computer until I was six, a PC until I was 15, the internet until I was nearly 18, a car until I was 27 and a flat until I was 28 and a half. Going by your warped logic, I didn't want a car at 17 so why would I want one at 27?

Anyway, +1 channels are cheap to run and very profitable. They build their own schedules, the adverts take care of themselves and obviously the broadcasters love them in the multi-channel era. I would presume ITV have seen the potential on the back of the success of Channel 4+1 after its launch three and a half years ago.

Regarding "tough luck", well you could have phrased that better. Instead you look like a moron. Do remember that at this point in time most Freeview boxes only have one tuner and most recorders can only record from one input and most still don't have Freeview tuners built-in as standard. You'd have done far better, rather than mouthing off with an ill thought-out argument, to utilise the words "iPlayer" and "ITV Player" instead of the words "luck" and "tough".

I think this just about sums it up!

(With grateful thanks to a man in Northern Ireland who knows who he is.)
