Attitude ? Moi ??

Nah you've got it all wrong, it's called debate. I thank you for coming on here and giving me the opportunity to exercise those debating skills. It's been fun, you're obviously staying up late to see if Granada have simply pinched the overnight ITV1 idents for themselves, so be sure to let me know won't you.

And so to bed, sleep well.

How hard could it have been to include regional idents on ITV's Xmas idents?

I really like the Christmas ITV1 ident. Yes agreed it's a shame the region is missing be at least the regions are entering into the spirit unlike last year.

Channel as thought are using their own Christmas ident region name as well.

i think its a shame granada are so lazy. they waste vast amounts of money on failing ventures and yet their core business is treated like this? -> if granada think that a national comercial channel would be succesfull - take over channel 5, and free up regional licenses for regional companies.

im not a great fan of carlton, but they investd in a good set of xmas idents 3 years ago - which still look impressive - the initial outlay has paid off.

i liked your suggestion mromega200, but i thought it should be the other way round (region name in the centre - and itv1 in the sky.)  btw, as i dont live in a gmg region, i used the original itv1 image uploaded by square eyes, which is probably on his site too www.se-tv.co.uk

Yeah, an ITV1 logo on there that alternates between 'ITV1' and the region name as lights flash past or something would look quite nice. Maybe all the budget is going on next year...

There was an interesting post, I think it was in Broadcast magazine a little while ago about an idea put forward of the fifth channel originally being a US affiliate type system, where you could have a core network feeding programme to affiliates - sadly the infrastructure wasn't there, it would cost way too much and would be similar to ITV1 (well, the 'old' ITV1 I guess!)

Cheers, Asa

i know by posting this im going OT, but ill say it anyway...
carlton/granada are bent on creating a single ITV company, with the itc/ofcom/government supporting this move. the bbc have downgraded regional production to almost news only.

if this carries on, will we be the only developed country of this size without local broadcasting?

the only solution would be, carlton/granada merge - think of a new name for itv. then channel 4 becomes a US style affiliate system - it's government owned (so no chance of a take over, it already has a public service remit)

companies like channel and utv could transfer - and granada and carlton could sell of most licenses/properties to the new regional companies PERFECT

itv could then show coronation street twice a day, millionaire, and itv news (containing nice news only)

Yes, and then the ITC brought out RSL (Restricted Station Licenses) which cost about Ł4500. These are the city station licenses that The Oxford Channel, Channel M and C9 have.

As a famous businessman once said...

'The key to succeeding in business is to recognise when you've made mistakes and correct them'

Granada have made a hell of a lot of mistakes and have they gone out of their way to correct them? No.

ITV Digital is a total disaster and will be until Granada and Carlton wake up and realise they simply cannot afford to fund a no-hoper.

What has ITV given us over the past year? Sod all.
The only remotely decent thing I make a habit of watching on ITV1 is Cold Feet.

Get out your Christmas day listings magazine and look at the sort of **** e ITV are putting out on their premier channel.

You honestly think that Emmerdale, Coronation Street, You've Been Framed Christmas 2001, Stars in their Eyes and Who Wants to be a Millionaire are original, quality and interesting productions?

Contrast this to BBC One.

The Lost World - a new and original drama series
Alistair McGowan's Big Impression - Christmas Special
News
Eastenders (follow on from afternoon episode)
Only Fools and Horses
Before they were famous
And the fabulous Sliding Doors

ITV do not care. It really is that simple.

Go to France.

The ONLY regional station available to all is France 3. Even then, the regions it covers are too large to make it decent local output.

France 3 is primarily a more news focused BBC Two, programmes such as '19/20' - the main news programme on FR3 - lasts for up to 2 hours. Then again, France is a very news-driven society.
LCI - La Chaîne Info - is the most popular cable/satellite channel in Paris. LCI literally translates as The Channel News/Information, obviously with our English grammar it's The News Channel. It's the news channel from TF1, which, to say the least, is crap (TF1 that is, not LCI, LCI is generally excellent). LCP, you guessed it, La Chaîne Politique, is vastly better than BBC Parliament.

Oddly, regional news isn't that popular in France. TF1's Journal de 20:00h avec PPDA (PPDA being that all singing, all dancing French journalist who's more popular than our equivalent, Trev.) is very popular, but 55 minutes long and without local input. The 19/20 News on FR3 is all locally integrated and much more in-depth.

Radio is France is an interesting one. Radio Cherie - I think that's how it's spelt - is very interesting to listen to. It's a national station but operated by regional people. So you'll go from one region to another and won't notice that you've actually just switched to local output until a different presenter comes on reading local news, travel, weather etc. It's a very clever system. All of the local Cherie affiliates play out the same songs at the same time, but are operated by local bureaux.
