Eight of the top 10 best-rating shows of 2006 were on ITV1.
Excluding ratings for the football World Cup in the summer, Coronation Street has once again proved the most popular show of the year, winning 12.5 million viewers for an episode in March.

Rival BBC1 soap EastEnders came in second place, excluding World Cup football, with a top audience of 12.3 million viewers, though not far behind was the final of ITV1 skating show Dancing on Ice, with 11.6 million viewers.

Top drama of 2006 was ITV1's eagerly-awaited follow-up to Inspector Morse, Lewis, with 11.3 million viewers, according to figures from ITV.

Behind that was ITV1's safari drama Wild At Heart with 10.8 million.

In sixth place was the final of The X Factor, which drew 10.5 million, followed by veteran David Jason drama A Touch of Frost, with 10.07 million.

In eighth place was I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! with 10.04 million, then BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing, which scored 9.9 million.

ITV1 Emmerdale soap took the final spot in the top 10 with 9.8 million viewers.

ITV have really improved after a bad summer.

Rather embarrassing that after all the criticism ITV1 gets, the only entries in the top 10 for BBC One are a soap and a reality television show. Rolling Eyes

Apart from the two dramas, Channel Three's programmes were all reality/reality-contest and soaps.

As long as the ovis keep tuning in to 'save' their favourite aa-list 'celebrity', tv. won't get any better :-.

No comedy there in that list of course. Sigh.

Well we still have Christmas day for that to change - I can see VOD getting into the top 10 at least.

Yeah, how about some new comedy? Christmas comedy usually consists of a Christmas special of a show which should have finished (or did finish) 5 years ago, as has been the case for the last 6 years.

And Doctor Who should get into the top 10 for the Christmas Day episode?

Still this does show for all people slag off ITV on here it has the tv shows that most people want to watch.

Maybe Doctor Who will - I'm surprised it didn't make it already tbh.

Nail on head really.

Also interesting to note that of the two dramas, one is an ancient format, and the other was torn apart on this forum.

Ratings <> quality, I'm afraid.

And this is the sad but true statement.

It's the general stupidity of the British public that lap up the drivel broadcast on ITV 90% of the time.

There are signs they are perhaps going to consider quality over ratings for a little while in the coming months, but I can't see them sticking with any kind of concerted quality drive if their first one or two projects don't get an audience.

ITV have created an audience that now expects absolute drivel, unchallenging, lowest common denominator TV.

It may be too late to reverse this trend.

How hilarious are all these posts. Complain all year that ITV is 'going down hill, 'falling ratings' etc

When it is announced that people are actually still watching ITV, then the same people say 'They may be getting high ratings but all the programmes are drivel' so it doesn't count

Make your minds up, are you basing your opinion of channels on ratings or quality?
