I e-mailed both the ITV1 and ITV2 duty offices yesterday, and they replied literally ten minutes ago:

I asked when ITV1 would be launching, and if we would be able to receive all versions. The ITV1 Duty Office replied:

Quote:

I wish I could tell you. All we know is that ITV1 will be available via
digital satellite by the end of this year. All of the questions that you
ask are still to be confirmed and advised. We should know more within the
next 4 - 6 weeks.

I then asked the ITV2 Duty Office about ITV2 and ITV Sport Channel transmissions on Sky Digital. This is their response:

Quote:

Thank you for taking the time for contacting ITV with regard to
transmissions via the Sky Digital platform.

ITV1 has committed to making its broadcasts, including 16 regional
services, available on digital satellite by the end of the year. This
remains our intention.

At this stage we cannot confirm whether ITV1 will launch as part of the Sky
package, but we can confirm that viewers in digital satellite homes will
have access to ITV1 by the end of the year. We will announce a date for
launch in due course.

The situation regarding ITV2 and the ITV Sport Channel is slightly
different, and at this moment in time we do not have further details as to
when these will be available via digital satellite - the services have been
offered and are still under negotiation.

We fully appreciate viewers' feelings on this issue, and we will gladly
make our broadcast executives aware of your comments and concerns.

Thanks for that J2K. They seem dead set on getting us ITV1 with or without Sky's help this year which is good news. Did you ask them whether tests would be appearing? Actually, I don't know how many people at ITV would know. NTL who do the uplinking may be the best people to ask but then again, they probably wouldn't give a direct answer if it involves one of their clients.

Cheers, Asa

Asa,

Yes I did ask about the tests - I presume that is what the ITV1 duty office meant by saying:

Like you say, it's probably up to ntl to begin test transmissions.

Anglia NORWICH? What ARE you talking about?!

Anglia's HQ is in Norwich but it broadcasts two regional news services from there, East and West.

For those who are interested, the Anglia west service will be broadcast on Sky Digital. Viewers who wish to watch east will have to stick with analogue.

OK, OK I made a mistake! We can't all be perfect you know Wink

I didn't realise that about Anglia, I just assumed they'd have a second studio somewhere (Cambridge?) for the West region.

And that's another thing. Norwich itself is in the East sub-opt, isn't it? So why are they broadcasting the West version? Is it bigger?

Actually, I have to say I was expecting people to pick up my little mistake calling Westcountry TSW rather than this Smile

Well Anglia has one big news centre in Norwich where there are two studios, two galleries, two newsdesks - but all in the same room! Both the East and the West programmes are broadcast simultaneously from here (Norwich) but fed to the appropriate transmitters (Sandy Heath for West, Tacolneston and Sudbury for East). There are regional offices dotted around the region but they are bases for reporters and camera crews only.

Anglia has no sub-opts as such - all the bulletins and programmes are seperate split services - we don't opt out of each other like the BBC.

The BBC's west opt out comes from their Cambridge studio, but Anglia's all from Norwich!

*Not having a go at jason, just want to eliminate confusion*

When Carlton first started eating into Central (but before they renamed it), they moved the Birmingham operation out of its it's large Broad Street home, round the corner into a TINY new home in Gas Street.

Meanwhile, the Nottingham operation of Central/Carlton has expanded, and is now a HUGE site (I would say it is easily much bigger than the Birmingham Broad Street site was).

Big studios (i.e. for the likes of Family Fortunes ) are at Nottingham, because tiny Carlton Birmingham is virtually a sub-region news only operation (as Nottingham once was, and Abingdon still is). Even though Crossroads is set in Birmingham, it's filmed at the Nottingham studios.

So, in terms of size, Nottingham is the main site. But Birmingham is still the address for general correspondance etc, and as jason has said, it is still the default version of Central News. So in those respects, you could say Birmingham is the main site - as it's where Carlton Central 'is run from' (for want of a better phrase).

So which of the two is the 'main' site depends on what criteria you use to define the word.

Yeah I lived in Nottingham for a while and the Central site on Lenton Lane is a big complex. I understand Crossroads is made there now (instead of Nottingham). What happened to the Broad Street studios?

On the question of sub-opts, is a sub-opt just where they go to the sub-regional studio from within the main programme, or does it cover separate programmes in the subregions but still with the same overall continuity etc? Difficult one to answer I guess Smile

NTL have begun testing on Astra 2D but I was a little too late to read it on DigitalSpy as it's disappeared again but proper now/next EPG listings did appear for 9 test channels on each transponder.

Until Monday (I think!) there's no point creating a new thread so I may as well direct you to DS - the thread is available here http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/showthread.php?s=91d3bee552b73f7f91292ba57561aaf4&threadid=13229
