Two facts appear to be certain at this time:

1) ITV will be encrypted;
2) Your local region will be located at Ch103.

It is likely that other regions will be located elsewhere in the EPG, although that is not certain.

I'm fairly sure that to be able to put the region on 103, they'll need to encrypt fully. Therefore the encryption may or may not be a problem. The decision to restrict access to regions will be a purely political one on the part of ITV. From what they've been saying recently they do not seem too averse to channels being available, so that's probably what will happen. But it is impossible to be certain.

They will only be able to put the channel on 103, if Sky give them the Conditional access system, so come on Sky don't let em have it!!!!!!!!

What people are forgetting, is we can override their Conditional Access malarky. People in the UK are getting BBC ONE Wales, aren't they Ison! Wink

It's not impossible to get around this. Just get a BBC FTA card sent from an address in another region and bingo, another BBC/ITV region unlocked for your viewing pleasure Smile.

Asa - ITV still need to soft encrypt to stop people from watching overseas.

Logowatch - Yes, DSS can be used to toggle the streams as you say, but in this case I don't think that's what they will do. If they are going to use DSS (they are certainly testing with it so it's very likely), then it will almost certainly be introduced as a viewing restriction measure.

That is the way it stands right now. Personally, I don't really see the point in using DSS in this way. The main point is that it can be used for viewing restrictions however. Why ntl would be testing DSS for any other reason is beyond me. Time will tell, it really is to early to say what will or will not happen.

Yeah, thanks for reminding me Jon! Wink

Anyway, it is possible to get around the system - its not easy but if you are determined enough, you can do it.

Like I say it is not necessarily a problem. It's all down to ITV's attitude now.

So how is it done then?

Yeah but I thought these things were locked to a box. In any case we still won't be able to get all 15 regions that way...

This encryption is all very logical but what about one of the inital points (which I thought was a very good reason for all ITV1 being available FTV) which was the overlap regions. How are people with 2 or 3 regions on analogue going to feel to be unrightfully restricted to one? Free to view seems such a great option to waste.

Dynamic Switching System can't be locked to a box. Ok, a viewing card can be 'married' to a unique decoder, but certainly not dss.
