It was planned before hand if Arsenal lost to put on TVNB at 2200, with the news coming on time. In the event of course things dragged on a bit and I agree the football should have filled to 2230, but it wasn't a case of simply coming off the air and sticking on the first tape on the shelf - these things do get planned!
It still seems bizarre for something as open-ended as the footie to not have a couple of shorter fillers standing by too.

Were it a less peak slot then fillers would certainly be a possibility. I think they wanted something suitable for a footie audience and decided (wrongly IMHO) that Blunders would do it. Of course this is all based on the idea that everyone switched off when Arsenal lost and TVNB would hold then...decide yourself whether that's a good one Wink

Don't forget that seperate schedules have to be created well in advance for these possibilities - and you can't do one for a 25, 20, 15 etc gap as well as a 30, which was the plan. Partly because it's too much work and partly because you need to decide what ads will be run. In this event there was still two full breaks that needed to be in before the news, which had been sold on the basis of TVNB being the prog they'd be around....all v. complicated but these things do get thought about!

True - I was thinking more along the lines of what happens with BBC channels, where you can easily add or drop trails as required - and just have a dozen or so regional newsrooms to keep on the line - not a dozen or so different ad breaks to think of too!

Surely you just create one schedule with a short programme in the middle of it... then change the programme to one of an appropriate duration.

At worst you'd need two schedules if the filler programme had a break in it.

It's not rocket science. Rolling Eyes

I'm not defending the decisions made - as I've said, the idea was always to come off early if Arsenal lost. It's just that that particular scenario overran (I'm not a football fan - maybe someone knows why).

So rocket science or not - I'm only trying to explain what happened.
